I have enough points to draw a Georgia gator tag this year. Went scouting over the weekend on the Satilla River. Saw 25-30 total. A few bigger ones but not many. Only ones I could get close to were 7ft or smaller. How do yall close the distance on the bigger ones? Soon as I shined my green light on the bigger ones , they went down. I was approx 150 yards out on these and had the motor on idle speed. I even tried to goto trolling motor after I spotted them. This worked a little better but they still dropped pretty quickly. I would only shine the light for a sec or two just to verify it was still there. Whats the secret to getting close? I know a lot of yall hunt them . Im trying to do a DIY hunt as I have all the gear and have been applying for years.

rod and reel closes the distance, i never measured how far i can cast but its a long azz ways with a 7 foot rod and a big ol treble hook on the end. or just sit and wait him put in his area:D

Please explain what these points are and how you get them and what you can use them for? I'm just curious Thanks
Here in SC you pay $13 to get in the draw for gator tag.
If you do not get drawn, you get one preference point for next years drawing.

on some of the swamp people programs they used a heavy treble hook grapple and when the gator ducked to the bottom they would drag the grapple and hook the gator they don,t go very far when they sink to the bottom. but better have a good hold on yourself.

He's pretty much just gone drop straight to the bottom. You will see bubbles 9 times out of ten where he actually hit the bottom. Throw your weighted hook over the bubbles and ease it to you slowly until you feel him. Then set the hook and hold on. We harpooned several by just holding the light on them and rolling up on them pretty fast. Just all depends on what works for you. But we had a guy that could throw a harpoon seemed like 100 yds. Ha. He didn't play around with that thing. No way is right or wrong. Just what works best for you

Georgia has a preference point system as well. Each year u apply and are unsuccessful , u get a point . I have 4 pts and this is year 5. Should 100% draw this time. Appreciate the tips . Wanted to do this with just bowfishing gear . I guess I will take a weighted treble and rope just in case .

for zone 1a and 2 with 4 points you have about a 70% chance to draw a tag. not sure about the other zones.

Mississippi has moved from the point draw system to a first come first serve system via an Internet application at a particular date and time. Whole bunch of folks upgrading their Internet service this month! :D

Sounds like the cluster that Illinois had the first year they went to a call in system for deer permits. Super long wait and they sold out quickly! Now they don't even sell out these days.

We have shot Quite a few through the years with Bowfishing Equipment down here. How close you get varies a lot on how much pressure they have on them each year but I can assure that it can be done. Each night is totally different from the previous as numerous times we have hunted a lake on 1 night and not been able to relatively close to anything all night and the next night on the same lake every gator in there you can hit with the trolling motor shaft. I don't know how long the GA tags are for but I would say with a little time you should be able to hunt somewhere that does not get a TON of pressure you should be able to get it done. But if you are hunting somewhere with a lot of pressure and they won't let you get close then a Snatch Hook can be Very Effective also.
