So recently I purchased a used Lowe 1648 and am in the process of building a deck. I am concerned with having too much weight up front. I would love to build an aluminum deck but do not any buddies around the Louisville area who has the skill to weld aluminum. I was talking with a knife maker and he stated that I should use Silver Solder. Would you all think that this would hold up to the abuse that the deck would take?

Thanks for your thoughts.

On a 1648 you should be careful not to make the deck to tall, I had one on my 1748 tracker that was 5" off the gunnels and I wouldn't go any higher. I made mine out of angle steel bed frames I found in the dumpster and expanded steel top with thin wall square tubing for legs.

Buddy of mine dipped his 1648 in the water over the weekend and ended up having to retrieve it from the bottom. It has a raised deck. As far as soldering it...no way. That's asking for trouble.

Soldering is low-temp, brazing is high-temp. Soldering is not strong enough. Brazing might be under the right circumstances. You need lots of surface area for strength. Like, if you have one tube butt into another tube at a right angle, it's no where near enough. Also, if you are not a pro with a torch, aluminum melts at a pretty low temperature...

No, no and no...... would drill and bolt together a deck or make a wooden deck with screws before tried to “braze” or “silver solder” one together....

I do Refrigeration work and use 45% silver to braze copper to steel or steel to steel, and 15% silver to braze or silver solder copper to copper all is gas welded with torch... I use oxy/acet but some use hotter acetylene turbo torch and is stronger joint than soft solder but nothing strong enough to use as a deck, and those miracle aluminum “brazing” rods aren’t good for anything to be structural. Either a regular aluminum MIG spool gun or TIG welded if an aluminum deck, if made a steel deck stick arc welded could be an option but nothing brazed or soldered
