I've been looking around for a new boat for a while. Found a boat on Craigslist that fits my bill. Its a 18 foot riveted flat bottom Jon boat. It's 50 inches wide at the floor, comes with a trailer in good condition an older 50 hp force outboard that has a new impeller and runs good. It has a center counsel, 2 swivel seats, a working bilge pump, and navigation lights. The only problem is that a couple of the rivets have very small leaks. I figured I could patch them up before I put a new paint job on her. He is asking $2800 obo. I thaught it sounded like a good deal but wanted a few other opinions. Thanks in advance guys.

I just bought a 1848 with a freshly rebuilt mid 70s 30hp johnson tiller with a deck and halos on it for $2000 if that helps any

I dont think it is worth that much... For it being riveted, and with the force on it, I would say its worth about $2000. The older force's tend to be pretty crappy motors and you will always have small leaks with rivets. I bought a bass tracker and the hull was welded, but the ribs were riveted. I bought some aluminum patch sticks from cabelas and hit every rivet and it is holding great! If the guy selling the boat won't go $2000 or under, I would sugest you keep looking. You could ask him how much he would take for everything but the motor... I would say thats worth about $1400... Right now is not a good time to buy and if you can try and find one in the fall, that is when people are letting there boats go for cheap... Plus an 18'50" isn't that wide, try looking for an 18'60", that will be an awesome boat! This is just my .02, but I hope I helped some! Good luck and post some pictures if you get her! I still need to post my entire bass tracker rebuild...

I dont think I would buy a boat with an older force.....I have towed 4 or 5 boats back to the ramp....half had an older Force with serious troubles. If its an 18 ft riveted (no welding) I would be cautious. I have seen some really cheaply made riveted jon boats. Smaller supports, thinner material, and so on....I would be interested in a photo and make on the boat....I wouldnt give him a nickel for the motor and would plan to buy one as part of the project....atleast a 50 horse...70 would be better...Good luck bud.

I agree with BigBallin as well, that 40 won't push your boat very fast, if its only you in the boat, it may go 30mph tops, add dead fish and friends, cooler, genny and lights and you will be puttin at about 20 mph if not less...

Around here that would be a decent price, but I am skeptical of those motors too. I have a bowfishing pontoon listed on here for alot less if your interested lol

Talked to the guy a little bit today. The hull of the boat welded just the ribs are riveted so I was happy to hear that. I'll try And put some pictures up tonight. From the way you guys make it sound the motor is junk so that kinda makes it worth a lot less. I've never even heard of force motors. The motor is a '86 and the boat brand is painted over so I donk know what kind it is. I'm probably going to take a look at it early next week and offer him 1800 for everything and see how it goes. I think he will be negotiable on the price. I want a 50 inch wide boat because I go through some tight spaces through duck season. Thanks for your help I'll keep you all posted on weather I buy it or not. I'll try and put some pictures up tonight.

Some of the force motors were good. Mercury made them for a few years. so dont let these guys tell you all force motors suck. My family has a 16' lowe fishing boat with a 1994 50 hp force since it was new and to this day it runs like it was brand new. And the motor was built by mercury.

This motor is a 1986. is that a good year for the force motors or not? He says it has troubles staying running at a slow idle but runs great with any throttle.

Can you put the link to craigslist up ? And if I'm not mistaking mercury made the force motor from 1984 to 1999 but don't hold that to me and not running at slow speeds could just be a stoped up carberator, I also agree with them if your looking for speed that motor won't be enough but it will move you and to some people like me that's all that matters haha

I'm probably gonna sell the motor if I buy the boat then look around for a 60 or 70 hp mercury or some other higher brand motor. I've been using a 1448 mod v with a 15 hp so I'm not really used to speed. But once I get a bigger boat I'll be runnin on the Saginaw bay here in MI a little more so some more speed would be nice.

I bought a 1860 rivited with a 50horse merc a 18hp fan and all for 1500.00 out the door!:)

I believe thats one of them motors that chrysler marine was in kahoots with....I would offer dude up 1800.oo and be ready to give him your number, shake his hand, thank him, and walk away if he says no. I think boat may be decent, I would run the motor with the intention of replacing when it pops. Would probably make a pretty decent rig. Judging from interior appearance, boat has been well used and not loved.....Which is not a problem as long as this aint gonna be your "last boat". I would buy it cheap, use up most all its got left in it, and pass the deal on to someone else when you are ready to upgrade. Hope it work out for ya sir...

Offered the guy 1700 yesterday and haven't heard back so I'm perty sure he took it as an insult. But it is what it is and I'm sure I'll find a bettEr deal before long. there was no way I was fonna pay over 2 grand for a older Jon boat and a worthless motor.
