I don't know anything about digital ballasts but I was told standard 250 watt HPS use around 300 watts each. And you only want to use 80% of your generator so you could run 5 on a 2000 watt genny and 8 on a 3000 watt genny. That would be on the safe side. You might be able to add one more to each if that's all your genny is running. (no troller, interior lights, radio, ect.)

sounds about right! amps and power all match up to these numbers!

Digital ballast are a lil more efficient and a lot lighter in weight... also certain ones are dimable to allow you to run different wattage bulbs... yes 5 on a 2000w rated at 1600w.

I plan to run lumatek ballast with 250w bulbs at the 175w dim setting to allow me to run 6 total... will run the two up front at 250 and the 4 on the sides at 175.

Digital ballast are definitely the way to go. Not only do they save on weight and headache, you can switch between metal halides and high pressure sodium just buy changing the bulbs (you don't have to buy them expensive pulse start bulbs) depending on the water conditions or your personal preference. I got the 400w on my boat and sometimes we will just switch to MH if the water is super clear or I just want something different. The lumateks are the best and they have great customer service
