I got a cabin on the Brazos North of Lake Granbury in Texas. I went out one morning before sunrise with my Q-beam and my dock had a bunch of gar all around it. I decided to get a bowfishing setup and try my hand at it.
Last weekend a buddy and I got one each. We only saw a total of three that night. The next night I saw no gar and the water was thick as thieves with shad...
So I'm seeing already that there are patterns I'm going to have to figure out if there is a rhyme or reason to this. I know there are some big ones out there and at least on one night (where I did not have a bow) they come out in droves.

I'm very new to this. My rig is an old PSE compound with an AMS Pro retriever reel. I'm alsonew to the forum and look forward to reading up on the forum and getting some info and advice

Well.............................. You're already hooked !! Ha Ha !! Welcome to the madness !! Just keep readin & askin questions.

all the green light stuff I'm seeing is pretty pricey. I did a quick Google search to find homegrown alternatives. The one thing that stands out and makes sense in that if you put 120v AC underwater you don't have room for error. I'm thinking of maybe a 12v DC HID light in a green tint jar with waterproof grommets, etc.
After buying the cabin my funds are a bit thinner. My splurging days are over for 10 years unless something changes for the better. My wife would busta cap in my arse if I spent $300+ for underwater dock lights :(

I'm out here now and turned on my halogen shoplight on the dock. I haven't seen a gar yet... 3 hours now. Is there a chance that running lights on the dock 10' above the water causes the gar to stay away? Or is it more likely it's Feb 1st and just not a good time?

We usually don't start seeing a lot if gar til late March in my area

Welcome! I live 5 miles south of you off tin top on the north end of OTS we need to kill some fish together sometime!

my dock

fortunately it's on the channel side so even with the level lower than any of my neighbors out there remember it being, the water is still 10 feet deep off the end of it.
I need to get permanent lights. Other than that it is a pretty convenient place to shoot from. Even after I get a deckboat or pontoon I will probably shoot from it more than anywhere else.
