Looking to set up boat. Why wouldn't running 120v 50watt LED lights off a car battery inverter (DC to AC) work as well as using 12v 50 watt LED's off same battery? 120v LED lights cost less than the 12v ones. My guess is that the inverter uses some of the battery power thus shortening time to run the lights. I am looking to run 4-6 50 watt lights for 3-4 hours.........would the inverter route work? Thanks in advance.

We tried it and the inverter we had (don't remember the brand) had an internal shutoff that turned it off when the batteries started getting low, but when running 12V they just kept working. We only got a couple hours with the inverted and 4 to 5 without with similar lighting

your trying to run silent im guessing? if not you could pick up a super cheap generator to support just the lights. hd drop cable to gen and lights to drop cable and done

You load is consuming a courant which is 65w/ 12v= 5.42A. The time the battery will long is 100 Ah/ 5,42= 18,45 hours. But the inverter is not 100% efficient so let's say 17 hours approximately.

I may be wrong here but Im assuming that is for one light only.... If he wanted to run 4-5 50w lights the total wattage would be 200-250.

4 lights:
4*50=200w
200w/12v=16.7A
100AH/16.6=6.0 hours of run time before there is zero juice left in the batteries. Running batteries below 50% causes damage to the batteries. Actual run time would be closer to 3 hours... 2.5 to be more realistic.

5 lights:
5*50=250w
250w/12v=20.8A
100AH/20.8= 4.8 hours of use... again leaving zero juice left in the batteries. Realistic run time is closer 1.5-2hrs of proper use
