I have a 31hp vangaurd that wil not idle at times when you first start it and sometimes it will idle for two hours and suddenly will not, I have check comp. 100 pounds both cilenders checked for vachom leaks can"t find any, changed fuel pump and regulater, rebuilt carb, still will not idle any help please, just want to go bowfishing.

Stickinmofish gave his carb a good douching and did something else and it ran like a top.But I forget what else it was he did do now.I wanna say adjusted the valves but that may not be right.:cf:

If it has been a while since you changed plugs you may want to go ahead and do that too.

Yep adjust the valves!

how clean are your jets in your carb and also how much lashing do you have in your valves. i used to work in an atv shop and i saw tons of idle issues due to the lashing in the vales being too tight, engines would fire then rev and then die once they hit idle revs

Sounds like a piece of trash floating around in the carb, it only takes a tiny little piece to cause problems. If this isn't it which I bet it is, as others have stated second choice would be the valves.

I just got done doing a whole bunch of chit to mine and it runs like a new one again.

First thing we did was drained the tank and filled it with Premium because it never has ran worth a crap with ethanol gas.
Cleaned the carb as good as one can be cleaned.
Oil, oil filter and air filter only had a few hours on them so didn't mess with that
Changed fuel filter
Put on a new fuel return line because the old one has seen better days
Put in new sparky plugs
Pulled the flywheel and cleaned the surface rust off of all contacts for better spark
Put in a new ignition switch and new wire from steering stick to the fan
