There are many reasons for this build. It's a cheap ride on the water, 1 man duck destroyer, small water Bowfishing rig, pond hopper,trot/jug lines, fly fishing, frog hunting, a rig for my boys to use and most of all, because I can! I built a wooden test boat and really liked it. Now for the up grade. 848, .090 aluminum, 14" sides, 52" beam. Power will come from a bow mounted troller and a small homemade long tail mud motor. I have plans for a ton of removeable attachments. Duck blind, lights, hand cart, who knows what else. This rig just granted me access to the Brazos and the navasota river due to non existent ramps. Custom fab cut the plate for me and I started tacking last night. 11/2 hours so far.

Here's the update and a confession. I learned (kinda) to weld on this boat. I never could get it 100% water tight. Stupid pin holes kicked my butt. I gave up, broke out the 5200 and fixed it. A year later she is still water tight. I did have a weld break during use this year on a 1" square tubing. My welding has improved greatly over time and I can now run kinda ok looking but water tight beads. Looking at the 848 now I can see tons of flaws and really wanted to build a new one with my improved skills and knowledge. However I decided to swallow my pride and complete my first boat. I started out with my grandpas 1032 Jon boat and maybe my boys can start out with this one. Long story short: I fixed the broke weld and began the upgrades.

The plate will be riveted on and I built a simple little bolt on Troller bracket. I also welded in a "track" that my bleacher, aka bench seat, can slide up and down on to make adjustments as needed. I have started the sanding and priming process as well. I have to beat payphone to the desert camo paint job!

Cool little boat man. This build and Payphone's have really inspired me to build a small boat.

I find it amusing though, I used to get my head bitten off for suggesting it was OK to fish off of small boats if you use common sense. Literally I had people tell me I was putting lives in danger for simply suggesting you don't need a 1872.

Now there are a handful of micro builds and nobody says squat about it, but I digress.

Need more videos of these smaller boats.

I grew up in a 1032 and thought my 1648 was a beast! Now I run a 1760 and have no desire to go any bigger. Little boats do a great job as long as you use common sense and leave the drunks and idiots on the shore. My buddies did give me a hard time at first. That 5 1/2' gator gar pic shut that down though! Use a wee boat like its a wee boat and you will be fine.

On a side note Garry, I built 3 wooden boats before this one. A p-row( I know that spelling is wrong), a 836 and finally a 848 based on your design via youtube. The last was my favorite boat and what I based my aluminum build off of.

I had a lot of fun in that little wooden boat, floating down the river is huge here and that boat drew a lot of attention. I never shot off of it, I could get around alot faster with a trolling motor mounted on my canoe.

Everything feels stable after you've stood and shot out of a canoe.
