Pretty easy to test the switch so do that first. Then check the wire where you are supposed to be grounding the ignition and put your tester on it...then flip the switch again to see if it is really passing ground or not. If there was something wrong with the coil it would not run at all....I had a bad one once so I know. Sure sounds like a corrosion problem but I have found that switches are the first ones to have corrosion problems.
On a side note I just hooked up a nice brass switch and wired everything up for the front start/kill and nothing worked. Turns out the switch was bad right from the beginning! Even those nice brass (so called marine) switches go bad!!!
