In need of some help. I'm building a new boat and I'm thinking of using LED lights both under water and above, was wondering if anyone has used them yet. Would appreciate pics and input. Thanks!!!

Planning on checking his out this weekend. From what I have talked to him they are smaller & cheaper than most but still put out some amazing light. Not sure brand or anything but hope to get the lowdown this weekend.

KSkiller did not get his others in time to mount for this last weekend. The 2 he had on there were pretty small, lightweight & amazingly bright. I am waiting to see the final set-up & am seriously thinking about doing the same to my boat.

If you use lumens to compare the apples to the oranges, I guarantee that you'll rule out LED's right off the bat. For some reason, the light penetrates the water very well and the reflection off the water is minimal. If you're thinking about switching to LED, buy one to see for yourself. There are numerous benefits to LED's and cost is the biggest drawback at the moment. But, everybody knows what happens to the price of new technology.

I would think comparing lumen output would be realistic since it's an "apple to apple" comparison. I would like to see some on the water comparison between LED's and M/H's but am too cheap to buy the LED's. lol

Id agree Bgilson. I found the same thing, so I called a few manufacturers, I would compare lumen data to DB ratings on Generators, they all use different parameters. Seems the HID lights are rated as what the light produces, and a lumen is a measure of how much light hits a 1 sq foot area, or 1 candle power, the LED manufacturer I talked to got there lumen rating by measuring the lumens at the area "to be lit" so in there case 10' high to the meter on the floor.
LED is very directional light source, where as HID is dependent on the reflector system redirecting light that is emitted in all directions. I found some on sale for 190 bucks, I think I might try one, my problem is no boat to put it on:cen: what I get for starting my boat build with a red generator instead of a hull.

I don't think LEDs penetrate well at all in anything but super clear water, I say this from experience I have a led spot light and a halo spot light and I cant see chit with the LED on the water but in the woods the led is a lot brighter it seems Ill try and get a picture of them side by side looking at the same thing off of my dock tonight...

I just put 10 27 watt led's on the boat yesterday and can tell no difference between them and the 8 175 MH's i took off other than its dead quiet.I'm not going to say they are as brite as 250 or 400 watt Mh's or HPS's but the are just as brite as 150's and 175's and it was worth every penny to get get the genny off the boat. They really arn't that expensive either. Roughly $50 a light depending on how many i order and thats cost on them.I'm not making any money trust me.I just had to set up an account in order for me to place an order.I will try to get some pictures posted on here tonight after dark for you guys to see.I LOVED my Mh's ,i was just tired of the whole genny thing.

We went out last night for about an hour and shot in windy murkey water and put 4 fish in the boat. The fish that were there we had no problems seeing. With the hps lights that were on the dock i bet you couldn't see 10'' but with the led's we shot 2 of our fish at 2 foot. LED's have come a long way in the last year and just keep getting better. Now they just need to find a way to get the price down even more. Also for you Texas guys,we will be at Rayburn the week of July 11th if you want to see them in person.

I talked to Kskiller this weekend & seen the 2 he had mounted for driving lights. They were bright as heck & I am planning on hooking up with him sometime to see the new set-up in person. We talked money & such also & the deal is he had to basically set-up a business account with them & he is thinking about becoming a dealer so he can resell them to others. He told me that the more he orders at a time the cheaper they get. As soon as enough of us Kansas boys see them in action we are going to pool our orders to get cost down. I am 95% sure I will end up with 10 of them on my boat.

Exactly what Mswhitehead said. The bigger the order the cheaper they are. Shipping is also pretty high since they are coming from over see's. Also remember they are brite white like MH's not yellow.

The ones i'm running will run either 12 volt or 24 volt. At 12 volt they pull 1.4 amps per light. At 24 volt they pull .64 volts per light. For me running a remote ballast box and genny in the back i am saving weight going over to 2 batteries at 45 pounds each not to mention it quiet. I'm running 2 of the interstate srm-24's that i beleive are rated at 80 amp hours each.Long story short 10 of them on my boat at 24 volts will run a long time on 2 batteries.I'm guessing 20+ hours on a single charge easy. That would be real nice if you have clients on the boat or like to film. No noise and white lights. I am going to take a few pictures tonight of my boat before i go in to work and will post them on here in the morning for you guys to see since i now have them all hooked up.
