The site has been backed up......... and on a regular basis. The last back was less than a week ago. The issue is with the data base, when the processor puked it corrupted the entire data base files and rendered then useless. Alex spent almost two days trying to repair them with no luck.

So welcome to our hell.

Weird that it corrupted the backup files. On a related note, my site has been under a barrage of attacks this week. Maybe an anti virus?

As it turns out, the corruption was being backed up. It was only at the restore procedure that this was discovered.

Lessons learned... keeping backups is NOT enough. Periodically restoring from backups to make sure they, themselves, are not corrupted is a MUST.

very very very painful and expensive reminder to a lesson already well known :-(

Is it possible anything "sticky" worthy be put on an external disk? I think the species pics and only a few other topics would be beneficial and sometimes irreplaceable. Most of the other stuff we can live without or recreate.
