I don't want to aggravate my elbow right away at the beginning of the spring season in March. Can somebody recommend Pole spear? speargun? to use from the front of the boat? The aggravation seems to come from holding the bow for any length of time so a crossbow doesn't seem like it would solve my problem.

I'm open to all suggestions even if not a pole spear. If I get a spear I'd like to use my current bowfishing points on it.

Get one of those belt holders you put the lower limb of the bow in, goes on your belt and straps to the leg, take the weight off your bow arm and still be ready to shoot. Sometimes if long night, I put the bottom limb on my Oneida in my pocket

Unfortunately I don't think that will solve my problem. I had considered this already but my recurve is light and it appears more that keeping my arm in one position for longer periods is part of the cause. I've tried switching it up at times but with it being irritated it's hard to tell if anything helped. Even wearing a pressure band intended to treat tendonitis didn't help.

Shane and I keep a spear on our boats (not during tourneys). Its a blast to switch it up a little. Haven't had much luck with carp but kill a ton of suckers and gar with them! I'm not to experienced with it but I like some weight to it. Don't know if it would help or hurt your elbow but the extra weight helps with not having to throw it as hard. More of a controlled and pointed drop. Drive to the bottom and push it up and out of the water. Pulling it causes more pull outs. 6' overall length works great giving plenty of reach. Tie a +10' rope on the non tine end so you can get a far fish. I tie a big loop on the vary end of the rope so it is easier to catch if you loose the spear and rope.

Here is the bow legger http://www.getoutdoorshunting.com/bowlegger.shtml that is used as a tree stand leg mount, but if used the belt loop holder and maybe a strap or cord around your chest with the s hook that holds the string could clip to, would be hands free with bow in front of you and be able to have arm to side rested... Just a thought

I'd just hold the bow with my right arm and swap over for a quick shot.
I usually drive with my right but if I was having problems I would make someone else drive

Wow, must be bad, I started reading and first thought switch to recurve for lightest possible bow and try a band but it says you have done both.

I think before I went to a spear (sounds like fun though) I would make a 3 foot tall bow holder to just hold bow by me for quick access. Something like this on eBay but tall off a weight in the boat that could be shuffled/adjusted and removed easily.

don,t know what reel your using but on the bow i have the penn reel mounted on have a rod that i shoot through that is about 15 inches long its stiff enough i can just rest the bow on the padded rail that is around the deck which is thigh high but a recurve dosen,t shoot well with a rail i like a short axil bow with rail.

Thanks for all the suggestions. That bow holder idea is something I've toyed around with. I think I could make something like that work attached to my knee rail. I liked the idea of the belt holder with the s hook too.

i use my arrow as a bow holder, i am right handed and hold the string with my right , i only grab the riser with my left when i get ready to shoot...when in moving along i have string in right hand with bow next to me pointing to the deck with an arrow knocked in and resting with the tip on the deck pointing down , its gotten me through some long weeks of shooting, i to have a bad elbo plus bad shoulder...
