Yeah I've done it a few times. Start quite a bit nock high and work your way down because you'll get more false readings if you're close to square. Depending on how you release you're probably gonna be over 1/2" above square anyhow so start about 3/4" or a little above and slowly work your way down. A right tear that wont go away could be from too stiff of an arrow and maybe even a yolk tuning issue. If the spine is stiff then increasing the poundage will solve it. Make sure you tune with a good straight arrow because if you tune with a crooked one then you'll have a heck of a time.
 
Yeah paper tuning is just a starting point. It helps you to get your spine right down to the nitty gritty and everything set pretty close so you can put the final touches on it shooting into a deep clear hole to get the arrow tracking perfectly straight. If you're shooting a spinner you'll want to completely eliminate left and right tears and you will also want to tear a little straight high. Reason being is up close it's supposed to be that way and the line will pull the back of the arrow down once as it starts peeling line off of the reel. A perfectly tuned bow will tear straight nock high.
