Are you talking about the hand-propelled spear? That's a great question and one that I never thought of. Let me check...

Nate- I just talked to Rob. There hasn’t been any discussion about bowfishing for pike & musky through the ice, and he agrees that bowfishing tackle is a disadvantage compared to hand-thrown spears. He believes that this is simply an oversight and doesn’t know of anybody that would have objections to adding "bow and arrow" to the gear used for pike/musky spearing. Rob will be at the meeting and he’ll bring up the issue. Good catch!

On a side note, some of you are asking for an update. The vote will hopefully take place tomorrow. They’re still going back and forth with the pike/musky spearing crew. So, hopefully the vote will be tomorrow. If it doesn’t, they said that it will be January at the latest. Either way, he’ll provide an update after the meeting and I’m sure that somebody will copy his email text on here for everybody to see.

Sweet thanks for passing that on after doing it last year its a ball and i was hoping to get a few more people into it and help the sport grow

Hello,

My name is, I'm a deputy with the ..... County Sheriff's Department as well as a very avid outdoorsman. During the summer months I get some time off the road and am fortunate enough that I get to patrol the Muskegon river on a boat. And when I'm not working I'm usually fishing. I have seen first hand how destructive carp can be. Carp spawn right about the time largemouth bass do. This brings a lot of carp into the shallows where the bass make their beds. I have watched, numerous times, a carp swim through a bass bed and blow all the eggs out with their tails. If they don't just eat the eggs. And they do the same to all other species included trout. As I mentioned I work on the Muskegon River which is one of the nicest trout streams in Michigan. It's gorgeous. The river gets great runs of salmon and steelhead during the spring and fall. These fish come all the way up the river to the croton dam. This is a dead end for the salmon and steelhead as the cant get passed the damn. They stop here and spawn in the rocks and gravel beds. Unfortunately this is a dead end for carp too. And they spawn and feed heavily in that area too, destroying the eggs.

I guess what I am getting at is a thank you. Thank you for looking into allowing sportsman to harvest more of these fish, hopefully in these problem areas. I understand the trout streams may be off limits but hopefully during summer months they won't be. That way we can get carp out of the river bedding areas so the eggs can stand a chance when the salmon and steelhead run. Also for making the seasons in the book much easier to understand! Michigan has such potential for a great fishery ad I firmly believe that FO-219 is a step in the right direction!

Thank you for your time and dedication to preserving Michigan fisheries.

PRELIMINARY update courtesy of Amy Trotter (MUCC):

"there are no problems with the bowfishing part of the order, however the muskie/pike spearing part of the order is still getting some discussion. The Director said he wants to hear that discussion prior to signing it today or holding it over for another month."

This just in:
"The Director said that he will sign Fisheries Order 219 as it was presented today."

  :applause:  :hb: :tu:

Can someone please clarify?

So it sounds like FO-219 still HAS NOT PASSED, however side information was conveyed that it is only being held up still due to non-bowfishing related provisions?

Please confirm. Thanks!

HOT OFF THE PRESS

I just spoke with both Rob Miller (MUCC Warmwaters Rep) and Debbie Whipple (Assistant to NRC) who both attended yesterday's NRC Meetiing and can confirm that the new FO-219 Regulations were signed into law by Director Stokes at about 5:15PM yesterday!!! Debbie sent me the Press Release, which is copied below.

Debbie said that this issue received many favorable comments in support and that they were impressed by the number of out-of-state letters/emails that were submitted, and that these all had a measurable impact on the decision to approve.

So, a HUGE THANKS goes out to all who took the time to get involved with this issue. To the future, those of you who will benefit from these new, very positive regulations, please consider getting involved in any future regulatory matters, even if it involves other states than where you currently reside!! It does make a difference!

DNR Simplifies Fish Spearing Regulations

New spear and bow-and-arrow angling regulations, announced by the Department of Natural Resources, will provide additional recreational opportunities starting in the 2012 fishing season.

The changes are a result of a multi-year review process begun by an internal DNR Fisheries Division workgroup designed to simplify spearing regulations. Changes in the regulations were made in concert with citizens on the Warmwater Resources Advisory Committee and signed in a fisheries order by DNR Director Rodney Stokes.

Beginning April 1, licensed anglers will be allowed to use spears and bows and arrows to take designated species of fish year-round, except on designated trout waters or as noted in the list of non-spearing waters. Gizzard shad, goldfish and grass carp have been added to the list of species.

The season for spearing northern pike and muskellunge through the ice will remain Dec. 1 – March 15, but the number of waters prohibiting spearing for pike and muskellunge has been reduced from 40 to 30.

For additional information, please consult the 2012 Michigan Fishing Guide, which will be available on line at www.michigan.gov/fishingguide or license dealers in late February.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state’s natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr.

I haven't been on here so I didn't mean to leave anybody hanging. Thanks Larry for filling in the blanks. :tu:

This order was a huge step forward, but we had one small casualty. After the new order gets implemented, it will not be legal to use archery tackle through the ice to shoot pike. There wasn't any opposition to winter pike bowfishing- it simply fell off during the rewrite. Since nobody noticed the oversight until Nate pointed it out the day before the meeting, there wasn't enough time to ammend the order. But, I would say that's a good trade! Rob will bring it up at the next Warmwater's meeting on Thursday.
