Anyone building their own LEDs? I see the chips and the drivers for sale. Is a heat sink the only other thing you need? If you have an aluminum boat and aluminum housings can you just use the light housing/boat as a giant heat sink? If anyone is building their own I would really be intersted to see some build pics. I know there was a thread where someone mentioned building there own but didn't go into any detail.

My thought was a housing the same dimensions as my 150 hps housing but instead of 6" deep build it only like 2 or 3" deep like 9x9x3 and weld fins to the back of the housing to act like a heat sink. Am I way off base with this?

maybe thats where it was. i did alot of snooping on there aswell.
Heat disapation is proportional and so is the money. light less of a heat sink and a little less money. but alot less light.

I tried with thermal epoxy. Ultimately I replaced the copper pipe with a sink from a CPU.

Heat sink is roughly calculated per watt, so a 50w needs half of what a 100w needs, technically a little less than half as a sinks effectiveness is reduced as the sink material gets further from the chip

I run a 12v system to my lights. Can you buy 12v 100 watt drivers?

i run a 12volt system with a converter for when the batteries get weak. i have been looking at the halogen head lihgts. 12 volt plug in, can be adapted to any houseing and pull less than 5 amps a bulb. a single bulb can put out 1700 lumens 2 bulbs in a housing is 3400 lumens. not ideal for a battery only set up but a cheap light for a converter.
120. I can run 10 100's and still fit two pm55 on a 2000 genny. just have to be easy on the inrush.

i would guess the 120's get hotter than the 12volt?

Nope,only the driver is different, the driver changes ac volts to dc volts, at the LED chip is the same which is what makes the heat
It will never see that load starting out with full charge. I am a fish hunter not a numbers junky. I don't care about carp and gar and with rays i am on the big motor usually. snakeheads are more like hunting, the better pay attention to the area,the more you will see. you can't do that full tilt hunting snakeheads.

im not a numbers guy either. if you start with a fully charged battery and run the converter from the start, then it dosnt pull as much on the genny?
