Honestly, for what we do, they are all we need. If i had a hard on for numbers, the LED stuff i dont think would work for me. I have six for my boat aswell but i am wanting to build them the way i want and can build them more compact than the ones on the market.
This is pretty much where we're at too. Going after snakeheads is more like stalk hunting. The other places we shoot for carp have more houses and we haven't gotten any complaints yet with 150s, don't need to start ticking people off with 1000w lights. Building LEDs looks like one of those challenges where by the time you're done you could have just bought some, on the first light at least....But once you get that first one figured out you could build some decent lights fairly cheap. I think I'm gonna have to try my hand at this one.

Well, I have a driver and warm white chip on the way now and just got a cheap heat sink to try out. If this one holds up passive then i know the sinks i want to use will work just fine. or i will find out what a BIG led fire looks like. either way fun fun fun

That's the challenge, the LeD doesn't just blow up or something cool like that. I'd about guarantee it will work, if not sinked right it can take hundreds of hours to see failures or just degradation of output.
I understand why mike b doesn't post pics of his design, but I'd be curious to see it and how long the led lasts if the housing/sink is as small and passive as claimed.
I would bet the farm that all the Chinese LEDs so popular here don't keep half their lumen output for 10,000 hours let alone 50,000 or whatever they claim.

hell for 8 dollars a peice, just swap it out for a new chip before 10k hours. good god the transom on my boat will fall off befor i put 10k hours on a light...lol I want to fool with the ************ before i get the Blux.

I'm the same way. I just have to figure my own degradation chart and decide what I'm willing to live with. Spitballin' it, I think if I can hold +80% output @ 500hrs I'd be happy happy happy. :D

Maybe I misspoke, the failure at 10,000 hours which it number totally pulled from my behind, the decrease in output is as soon as the junction temp goes up. The higher the junction temp the less lumen output. Ironically the warm white or amber spectrum is far more effected by higher temps. I'll post up some info I have later
I like this stuff, bit OCD about making them as good as possible, it's why I bought 80 dollar chips, I want 100% output

I've been a bit obsessive myself... I believe it's the right direction and certainly the future, just haven't decided if the available technology can take me as far as I want to go right now.

I saw that somewhere. Are you thinking warm is "amber" or "white"? I was thinking warm was "white" and cool was "blue". Still a significant change when the only thing that changed was the color.

Warm whites (2500-3500)is right in the amber or yellow orange range
Seems lately warm whites been all the hype, but many are unhappy after running them awhile. I can't help but think they lose ouput, and warms already have a bit lower lumen output than cools.

I figured out the sweet color this weekend. it ain't amber, it ain't blue and sure as a herpe on a hooker ain't white!
That could be the most disgusting description I've ever heard, YUCK! Left a bad taste in my mouth. We can hang out whenever, you'll fit right in...
