I know its early, but we wanted to let everyone know that the Idaho State Championship Bowfishing Tournament at CJ Strike Reservoir is going to be on July 12th-13th, 2014. Due to safety concerns as well as weight limit issues in the boats, the tournament boundaries will extend to the HWY 78 bridge in the Snake River arm of the reservoir this year. Anybody going past that bridge will be disqualified, no exceptions allowed. There will also be an opportunity to pre-weigh during the day at the launch or weigh in site(TBD) so guys you will have to be aware of the possible weight in your boats at all times. We have not set boundaries before in this shoot, however last year we had the sheriff questioning a few people and we don't want to have any problems with them....and we sure don't want anybody getting tickets, or worse yet swamping their boats! Our main concern is the safety and enjoyment of our participants in this and all of our tournaments. Looking forward to another great year!!

Those weights cannot be shot below the 78 bridge with 50 boats on the water. And even if it did guys would be more likely to off-load at noon, like they should, if they're closer to the launch. Would you rather see this tournament become a "big 20"?

FNA: We're you at CJ last year? How far did you run up?

Rob,

I'm sure enough to put a case of your favorite beverage on it. There won't be a team that breaks the 1100lb mark, one days weight, at this years tournament. I know this Wager is a little in my favor since you won't be there to do it :)

If you look at the numbers from the last 4 years total weight has dropped every year but last. The population is decreasing in the reservoir and the fish are getting smaller. Now last year was a different story. I believe the top 5 boats were jets (one I'm unsure of one ). But they were all above the 78 (plus more) and accounted for almost 10,000 lbs of weight.

Don't get me wrong, John, Jim, you and Josh are excellent shots. However, I believe adding those upriver boats to the rest of the field below the rapids will cut down on the single day totals.

Ready to shake on it???

Weird. I never heard about that. I only see one DQ from Saturday. On Sunday they only shot 150lbs. Was that them.

Nate, you want in on the action too? Your one of those lucky guys too :) Winning bows and such.

Johnson and Ransom, they went by us around 10 or 11 with a 100 gallon tank overflowing, heading to dump fish....they stayed at camp afterwards like Nate said..they were shooting below the 51 bridge, next to the Linker boys. The fish were stacked in one 100 yard area I heard and they were in full spawn that morning...no surprise to me ive seen it before

I don't know if the IBA has a different agenda or not. Safety is a issue though. There were many of us that we're pushing their boats above their limits. My 2072 is certified to carry 990 persons and gear. That's not much when you have bows, gas, decks and team members. And it's certainly too much if your running 18" of water, making hard turns for the last 20 miles. If someone goes down or gets hurt due to weight it's a lawsuit. It falls onto the IBA, and then it's board member's personal property. WBA state in 2012 gave the board a heart attack with 30+ mph winds. That's why the WBA will have insurance for all it's shoots this year.

I agree that safety has to come first but putting a limit on where you can go isn't going to stop people from putting 1100 pounds of fish in the boat. The only way to keep people from doing that is to put a limit on how much fish you can bring to weigh in. Every person at the tourney should know their boat and its capabilities. I was at the WBA shoot a couple years ago and we put our boat on the trailer and was planning on going back to sleep when they announced you could go elsewhere to launch.

We haven't heard anyone whine about getting beat by the guys running way up the river....if they are complaining then I guess they shouldn't enter the tourney. The point is safety concerns, I don't think anyone wants to see a boat sunk or anybody hurt....that being said we aren't trying to take the responsibility of it away from the guys in the boat. It is still their option to take the chance of overloading a boat and getting swamped or getting a ticket. What do you think the reaction would be from the sheriff if half the field got overweight tickets? Or somebody sunk a boat and drowned? Who do you think they would go to? The IBA would be the first contact, I guarantee that. We got talked to last year, and there were only a few boats that were in question. Do any of us really want to see our friends in these situations? Ask yourself that question.....And explain how this is different than allowing alternate launch sites or take out points in regards to SAFETY of the people involved. I don't care who this really makes sense to, if you want to run a tournament your way then plan one out and schedule it....

And furthermore, we have to obtain a permit EVERY year from the sheriffs department to have this tournament.....if we have problems we run the risk of the permit not being issued. So should we be pro-active, or reactive? If a small rule allows us to continue the tournament in the future, then why not?

I talked with Kevin and we are also going to try and set up a crew at the hwy 51 bridge ramp on Saturday, probably from 11:00-1:00, to allow guys to dump fish. Its preliminary, we have to get the manpower and equipment first before that's official, but we think we can get it done. There is a possibility of it Sunday as well, if the shooting is good enough that we need it.

This is great, more even playing field and better for safety, how many people really follow the weight rule on there boat? Good idea IBA,
Matt

Everybody had the option to run as far as any other participant every year of the tournament.....we are not changing that by shortening the boundaries. So it has nothing to do with a "level playing field". If you had the boat or wanted to get the style of boat that others had to run that far nobody was saying you couldn't.....Its a competition guys, if you feel someone has an unfair advantage with a certain style of boat, then buy that style of boat and run with him. Funny nobody ever mentioned this stuff when Bonham/Lauteren won two years in a row with half the field shootin next to them.....in a bass boat with a prop! Im just glad the sheriff never questioned us in the previous 4 years....esp. 2010 and 2011! Look at the weights we were all hauling then...well over what we shoulda been.

Strike is a fun tournament plain and simple. The strong competitors will still be at the top of the list just like with all tournaments. Now if we can unload at the 51 bridge I might just have to lug the airboat :shh: back up there. There's some incredible shooting to be had in a couple of those shallow bays.

Where does the reservoir actually start ? It's called C.J. STRIKE RESERVOIR SHOOT, NOT THE SNAKE RIVER SHOOT! So when someone goes up there for the 1st time, they are thinking a Reservoir, not and endless river. If you have ever shot below the dam, you know you could shoot over 2000 in 1 day, so if way up past the 78 is anything like that, then 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, are already a done deal. The water control people there say the Reservoir starts at the 51 bridge ? at least that is what the guy told us when we called and asked them when we 1st went up there? were going no matter what, but that's part of the reason no fan or air boats are allowed in some shoots such as the Bass Pro shoot they just had, and the noise factor. Everybody can't go buy and air boat, or any other kind of a boat that will let you go places no one else can go. All your going to do is scare off the small boats, and that's who makes up the majority of the teams. WERE COMMING UNLESS HELL FREEZES OVER ANY WAY !!!

The official res starts at the 51 bridge bud... you can run a prop boat up to the 78 bridge most years so anyone can shoot it... sure you might want a fast boat if you want to shoot that far up... but the tournament can be won in the res right at the launch if your a pro at shooting suspended fish in deep water... and you are correct the type of fishing below the dam is pretty close to whats above the 78 bridge... its just easier to shoot fish in 3 foot grass beds... but you can take a risk of getting pushed up on gravel bars and have to unload all your fish to get your boat off...lol...

DEPENDING ON IF we qualify at the US open in Springfield, we would come shoot Strike. Once more I have a question, with out bows in the boat, can we scout the day before ? if not why ? there is not a sport that you can't take a look at the place your going to compete, hell even lawn bowling lets you look at the playing field , . The last time we shot there we had I think we had around 700 lbs the 1st day, and ended up 7th ? no spawn, just hunted them down. this is a great shoot and I hope we can scout , if for no other reason but to see how far we can get up the river past the rapids. If it's true that above the 78 is anything like the water below the dam, then you'd better be able to carry 2000 lbs, cause unless it's changed we can shoot 2000 plus below the dam, we have done it, just like shooting fish in a barrel

The rules for the Idaho State bowfishing Championship at CJ strike have not been set yet. The board and president are working on getting the rules set and we will pass those along too everyone as soon as we get them finalized. Thanks for your patients,
Matt
