Mine did the same thing this year....took a shot of ether to get it going, then it ran like crap, rpm surging up and down. Then it would only run with the choke half on. Turned out to be bad gas / water in the gas. Pull the fuel line off the carb or shut off valve and drain some fuel out of it and see if it is milky or water in it. Also drain the carb bowl. Got about a half gallon out of mine until it turned to clear gas. Dumped dry gas in and topped it off with fresh gas and it has ran fine since.

My champion has been a great generator. I bought it in may last year and it fired first pull out of the box and always fired up first pull. It sat from September to Jan without running and when I tried to start it it would not start. After 100+ pulls i gave it a shot of either and it fired right up, ran rough for 5 min and then smoothed out. It ran great ever since....well untill it burnt up last weekend, but that is a whole different story.

I have had mine since 2008. About a year ago we were out shooting and the genny just shut off. I new it had plenty of gas, so I checkd the oil looked good, but still wouldnt start back up. I thought well I will add a little oil. Still nothing. So I unhooked the oil saftey switch and it fired right up. Still runs to this day like new. I change the oil regular and keep a good check on it, so not to worried about not having the safety switch. Mine is the Champion 4000.
