Yea I can see where high EGTs are going to be an issue, but I know guys can manipulate those with boost settings. I think you'll start to see more diesel airboats as time goes along.

we already tried the 12 valve cummins on a airboat with twin turbo's.the motor made 1400 horse with 1100 pounds of torque.there were sooo many modifications that had to be made,it was very frustrating and costly.the total outcome was the egt's would get 1,600 to 1,700 degree's in no time running at 3,600 rpm's.and putting a water system on it would have helped, but running long distances in tournament probaly wouldnt have been a good idea.
something is wrong with those tq numbers.

And yea a 1k HP plus motor will be MUCH harder to keep cool and need HUGE turbos making for slow spool. A 6-700hp motor would be much more realistic

Impaled nailed it. IMO, the RPM limitations of a diesel will make it unsuitable as a bowfishing platform. Untill somebody comes up with a workable variable speed, hydrostatic drive, or mechanical transmission, stick with the gas burner.

Now I may be an idiot but. Would a variable pitch (on the fly) prop fix the rpm range problem.
My way of thinkin. Go less pitch when fishin go less pitch to move slower. When on the move you can increase the pitch and let the sucker eat.
I aint sayin that I have a design but in my mind it would work.

In theory it would probably work...

in real world, I have not seen a "on the fly" pitch adjustable airboat prop. They got em for helicopters and arrow-planes, but I dont think there will be a need/demand for them to make one fer an airboat. and good lord... I would hate to see a price tag on something like that.

at this present time, Diesel bowfishing airboat = gross waste of time and money.

Play boat like that Panther or that Air Ranger, well maybe... but not for bowfishing.

The only really downside I see to them is the cost. But he'll you can buy a brand new in box 2011/2012 5.9 from cummins for around 16k, then would have to dump a lot of money in it for mods and stuff. But if your okay with having a motor rebuilt a 12valve would be the way to go

Oh Im sure it would be expensive. I saw a youtube vid. that had a small airboat with a variable pitch that had reverse. I aint sayin that it should be done, but could be done. The variable pitch prop sounds better to me than a variable reduction. IDK, Im not a smart man, but I know what love is LOL :)

find that video por favor

I just googled airboat with reverse and it came right up brother. If I knew how to post it I would. Hope that helps.

Do not hear much about bad diesel.
I think a nice mercedes car motor would work good!!
Bahaha, if ya got an extra 30k in your pocket 2-3 times a year it would be a great motor!!!!!
Do you know how many of those pos I have replaced in the last 9 years! The old ones were reliable as hell but turds, throw a new one in there and it will be a turd that doesn't smoke and that's about it! :)
Plus you would need another 10 gallon tank for Adblue lol

a diesel will definitely make the same or more power as any BBC and get better fuel mileage. especially if you throw something like LPG or CNG injection to the mix. plenty of diesels with over 500hp that get better than 25mpg, my goal is to run my cummins with CNG injection and get a combined fuel mileage of 27mpg, on 35" tires, and it's VERY realistic, although i'm not going for power, i should still get better than 350hp. which is plenty. PLUS, not as much black smoke(maybe not any at all! with the CNG)

there are plenty of other Diesels out there though, like a mercedes 5cyl diesel? you can make those get 400hp and be cheaper than any duramax. or a 4bt cummins? seen plenty of them with around 400hp with 800lb ft of torque. i would say VW diesel's, but i've never seen one with more than like 300hp? lol

if you wanted to build a GOOD setup, take a 12v cummins(or 24v), build it like ya want, bigger turbo(or twins) injectors, upgraded fuel system, then through LPG into the mix. you could have like a 10gallon diesel tank, and like a 8gal propane tank, and have a GREAT amount of running time, loads of power, and no black smoke. big ole heavy diesel truck can get better than 25mpg on the highway, a lightweight airboat should get alot more. but you would probably have to weigh down the front of the boat SOMEHOW...cuz these diesels aint no SBC...

i think the big problem here though is with the propulsion system, and not the motor though.

and just so everyone knows, rollin coal on the highway is one thing, rollin coal out on the lake or in the marsh or swamps, that's a totally different thing.....and alot worse in my opinion. i can see it affecting the environment in like a swamp or marsh or something ALOT more than it does around the cities and stuff. if you think the EPA is bad, wait until the wildlife conservationists start after you, they'll ban them from the waters right quick(and i would be one FOR the ban....rollin coal is not smart.)

yes, i am a Fish and Wildlife Major at my college. and yes, i am going to become a game warden.
