Ok...we were hooked up ready to go stick some fish the other night...we always test fire the lights at the house before we leave. Well we had no juice getting to the lights. I open the ballast box, and it's FULL OF WATER!!!!

So it looks like I'm buying digital ballasts, I've heard Lumatek are the best was to go, but what model? We're running 400watt HPS's, so I know I need a 400 ballast for each light, but is there any difference in the models???

Digital ballasts are not water proof so make sure you fix your water problem!! I prefer the Global Greenhouse ballasts. They are rated for generator use. Lumatek only makes one specific model of ballast that is rated generator ready. Most people get the LK400 ballasts thats about $120 from BGHydro. I don't think its rated for use with a generator so you may wanna consider using a surge protector for warranty reasons. Your dealer should be able to answer that question though. If I was buying more digital ballasts today, it would without a doubt be Global Greenhouse from West Coast Growers.

I've taken my global greenhouse out for a couple of trips now and they heat up the lights pretty quick. I did have the lights go out for a few seconds while running across some pretty choppy water but they cut back on and went back to full brightness in no time.

I will drop a light for a minute or two in really rough water sometimes. I am not sure if its the ballasts or bulbs. I have seen another boat do the same thing. I kinda think its the bulbs. But I don't know for sure why they drop out in real rough water from time to time.
