alright, I have been tossing the idea around to invest in a fan, I have a 20/72. im looking for ideas on engine size, reduction, fan size etc.. if I can get some input I would really appreciate it.

I can't speak for reduction, but my 2072 does great with a 24 hp honda pushing a 42" 3 blade composite prop at 18*. I couldn't ask for any more out of it. And if u do get a fan, I highly recommend electric (actuator) steering.

Call Bob at ultra-prop. Have a motor in mind but I went with 4 blades for better balance. But i wont be able to max 4 blades out to 18 degrees with a 20 hp. I would call and ask him how much motor its gonna take to turn that much pitch. He will try to sale you on a big dia. And reduction. But tell him your trying to stay small. I'd say a 27 hp with 1 7/16 shaft. 4 blade 42" maxed 18 degree pitch blocks and make sure the motor stays right at 2800-3000rpm. That combination would push like a tank.

I just got my honda 20hp working this week and it is plenty with a 42" 4 blade. My boat is 19ft and about 80" wide in the bottom at the transom. It probly pushes about 8-10mph at full throttle

I'd go 30 plus hp , a reduction, and a good sized prop . Shop around for parts and engine . I lucked out and built a 29 hp fuel injected fan , 2x1 reduction, and a 57" four blade prop at 18 degrees for about 2500 total .
Its go big or go home for good performance and anything over 42" will require a reduction. If you done plan on spending at least 6-7k keep it small.
OK well not to be a prick but all of what you said is wrong, completely. I have a 1860 f&f running a 25hp robin with a 52" competition prop direct drive and people that have rode in my boat can not believe the amount of push I have. One guy that I took fishing said he wouldn't be surprised is it would almost plane off lol and he's fished on several airboats and loved how mine fished. I have 450 in the motor and 450 in the Prop. I got the motor used so if you look around and buy parts as you find them and build it yourself it can be done with 1500$ or that's what I have in mine.
