I recently sold my last boat, and bought another boat yesterday. The boat is an 18 foot Nova. I pulled most of the carpet today and ran into a problem. My plan was to just pull the carpet, clean the glue, and then roll on bed liner over the floor. All the storage lids and deck floor are aluminum. After pulling carpet around the storage lids, about a half inch gap was there. I'm worried about it leaking there, and having slime and blood collect there. I thought about possibly cutting my own seals out of rubber or foam, but didn't know how well they would hold up. Also I would like to keep from putting a deck over the floor so I don't lose all the storage, and it's really close to being a flush deck already. Any suggestions?

If your trying to do it cheap then I would go with roll on bed liner and then go with some type of gasket. If money isn't an issue and you don't want to deal with it again then I would clean everything down to the metal and take it in and have someone spray the bed liner... I would highly recommend taking it in.. The roll on bed liner looks nice for about a week and its down hill from there. Doesn't matter how good you clean it or what brand you use it will all come off especially wherever there is foot traffic..... I did my boat 2 years in a row and made sure everything was perfect it didn't matter. This year I bit the bullet and spent the money 1 full season later it still looks the same as when it was done. Trust me its worth the money.....

I had my old 1648 quoted and they wanted over $800 assuming i had it prepped correctly. Over $1000 for them to do it all.

I spray bed liners and for me to do your boat it would be $1000-$1200. Gotta take all those doors off and then reassemble when done. But like stated above it will last a lifetime. Im going on 4 years on my boat and it still looks new. And im not nice to it!! Product testing lol.

I paid $1000 for my 1848 but I cleaning and etched everything.. I figured I had about $1200 in it total with prep sand paper, acetone, wire brushes ect. For the roll on bed liner I had prolly between $400-$500 if I remember right it took like 2 1/2 truck kits to do which were around $100 each....The other thing the two different kinds of roll on I tried if I spilled any gas it would eat right threw to the metal....

Thanks for the replies. I've about decided to take off the factory front deck and just build my own. Still undecided on floor covering.

yeah, like said above I'd go Line-X... lasts forever, not slippery like some hydro-turf, doesn't hold stank & looks great IMO

oh & I feel your pain on removing that spray adhesive the factories use to lay carpet... "momma says its the devil" LOL... on a serious note, the best way I found to remove it & prep your alum for the bed line is to use a cup style wire wheel but don't wear a lose t-shirt LOL... if you start to see the glue smeer while removing it w/ the wire wheel, take a break because you've heated the alum up too much & you'll need to run the wire wheel over a clean piece of alum to get the glue out of the wire wheel or use a torch burn it out... good luck

Appreciate the tips, and your boat turned out really nice! Would spraying the carpet adhesive with some type of glue remover help with the removal or would it just make it clog up the wire wheel?

I'm building a raised deck for my rig and its basically 8 foot square how much do think it will cost to line x it? also what kind of texturing would you recommend?

thanks & good luck w/ yours

I tried acetone, alcohol, paint thinner & some other chemicals but nothing worked as well as the cup style wire wheel... seems the carpet adhesive came off easier if it was dry... I'd recommend hitting the areas w/ a 220 grit after you wire wheel & then wipe it all down w/ acetone before applying a self etching primer then the bed liner

I'd call your local Line-X rep but my guess would be around a few hundred bucks... should be less than doing a truck bed if I had to guess

I know this ? wasn't for me but I figured I'd help :D

Ok, thanks again!

My Nova looked exactly like that except with 2 consoles. Stripped out all the carpet & most of the storage except the very front one which I cut down in size some. Applied Durabak liner & it held up great for several years.
