On a dead one, if you look in the roof of his mouth, an alligator gar will have two rows of dagger teeth. The short nose will only have one. On fish in the water; an alligator gar is just generally thicker and his nose is broader but tho the untrained eye hard to tell apart.

Im having this problem ...I seen alot of gar tonight in Florida but can't shoot gg an I don't know the difference

 

how long can them short nose get?

 

Not very long. Like Steve said ,nose of gg will be wider & more blunt.

 

I seen the two side by side and noticed yellow specks in the gg and none of that coloration on the short nose. my .02 worth but the small gg are much broader than the sng bill is squared off more also. My son's state record was 39" I believe, mine was 38" for the adult record. I've seen a few that would push the 4' range.
