haven,t got to shoot a large one yet saw a couple so far this year just too far out, for you fellas that over the years that have killed quite a number of them of various sizes what would you say the average distance in feet they would run out from the boat before they stop after being shot with arrow. i know some may go quite a ways but just what would be average .condition and depth of water may play a part. the reason i,m asking this penn 8000 reel holds about 180 ft of string after partly filling with 400 lb. then finish with 200 lb. spinner line.can,t use float with it was just wondering if i stuck a large one with it what to expect.

the bigger ones ive shot on the river never act the same, had more than most shoot straight down river and never stopped running till they wore out. had a few big ones that didnt really run that much, they go down and just kinda sit there. i always keep a water bottle with string tied to it with a loop laying around in the boat, if it keeps running i have someone hold the line and i tie the bottle on, cut the line from the spinner and let it go.

Youre gonna hurt yourself with backed 400lb line on an open face reel. Get a Muzzy XD or Synergy TI20 full of 200lb line so you dont kill yourself or lose fish

the harder you fight them the harder they fight you... shoot one and hold the line between your pointer finger and thumb and watch what happens.
i bet that would make you turn loose real quick so its better to let them run with no resistance when your line is about to play out then have to move and do something with the 400 lb. on first might could hold that a little have some anchor points on my rail.

they make a run to the bottom and just sit there... then you gather your nerves and get ready for a back up shot... seems like they fight the hardest when their eyes break the surface of that muddy water. shot some 7' fish and had them in the boat in 3 minutes....

what line do you use mostly and reel setup.

but... two times I will never forget... shoot a monster and let her go with a float, zero resistance.. she swam up river 75 yards straight to a log jam and never slowed down till she got there... when she knew where she was at she say on bottom... the current of the river caused the float to flow back down river. we picked up the float and I was just taking up slackand I raised the line was not facing the way we thought it was... she turned around and dug into her nest and I gave her a tug to make her run and simply pull the float out of the log jam... she had to of been swimming in circles down there and tired off to a log so she could pull that arrow out of her back... lost her, she ran to her hole and screwed me.

the other time... in the river no current I stuck one and let her go with a float, ...there was log jams everywhere... she steadily swam " not fast but quickly" up river through one jam to the next...I got a dip of snuff, got the other bow ready situated the boat, just gathering my nerves...I took off after her.... had to run her down 150 yards and before i got to the float to pick it up... the float went into a fork of a limb like the "Y" and got stuck. I was 30 yards away watching this tree limb shake and I could see water boiling way up ahead of the log jam... then I seen her break the surface and my arrow was bent back like it was fixing to break! she shifted into second gear and popped a wheelie and I will never forget looking at the float snagged in the stick and her head lifting up out of the water... as she pulled the arrow out.. bent the barbs backward....so yea sometimes they do just run and don't stop.

the two large ones i saw were in the river do they act different in a lake setting?

The big ones I have shot I used monkey wire and a muzzy reel. The 8,1 I shot totally ran me out of line 4 times. Chased her down with the kicker till we could get a second arrow in her. The 7'2 I shot a couple weeks ago swam straight to the bottom n sat there till we got on top of her with the boat then went ape chit. Brady is right the harder u fight them the harder they fight u.

Let's see it Brady! Show me a good way to rig a float to a muzzy and I may drop the bottle for good.
until brady shows us a picture the best i can fighure if the gar settles down a bit before you run out of line tie a loop in line and hook on a float if you could do that without getting a finger cut be kinda tricky.
