This is my second attempt at quiting a generator. First my watts needed for my boat are around 4,500, so there's no chance I I'm buying a inverter model. I bought a Generac 8100/6500 due to the reliability from one I've borrowed last season. My ideas were, cooling fans/ isolate fuel tank from heat/ exhaust and heat up out of boat. My main concern is weight a for my boat so I needed to keep it light

tore the genny apart and removed all the Chinese nuts and replaced with good ones with loc-tight! Then bent up a plate to make a nice air cavity and isolate the fuel tank

One major issue I found while test running it was the electric generating motor not the engine was hot! With no load either. Well blowing the hot air to the rear of the box, the electric motor pulles cooling air from back to the front. My fix was make a cold air intake that connects the back of the motor to the outside.

Question - why not remove gas tank completely and put in electric fuel pump from boat tank? Add more sound barrier instead.

by adding like 1/2" mdf board would make it quiter but it is a big genny! That's about the only thing I would change. II'm extremely happy on how much of the aannoying scream is gone. now it's a more of an errrrrrrrrrrr. Still nothing like an inverter though. The hardest part is trying to figure how to keep things cool. The work was worth it so far! Time will tell. I'm trying to find a decibel meter also and will report back.

I was thinking of putting the motor/gen unit into a smaller rectangular box with a fan at one end and access door by the outlets and then either remount the tank on top of box or use a separate tank altogether. I would relocate the airbox and outlets also. Now this is just a generic idea right now but with some trial and error I think I could save some space in 1542. I already took out the rear bench. Just an idea.
