I have a Coleman 5kW genny with a 10hp Tecumseh Engine (model HM100). To put it mildly, its loud as hell. We are planning to build a three sided enclosure for it this year to dampen the sound (leaving the back open out the back of boat).

With that being said, I was also looking for a better/additional muffler for the exhaust. You fine fellas/ladies have any tips or advice on this subject? Thanks.

We had a 5000 watt Coleman at our deer lease we tried exhaust snd it was still Loud as hell! We got a cheap muffler that I picked up at an exhaust shop but in my oppinion it was a waste of time and money we couldn't get that thing quiet. We wound up buying a long ass cord snd putting it way in the woods to get t quiet lol.

Get a quieter generator. Those things are loud as hell.I had one too.A buddy of mine bought a boat a couple days ago.It has a 6,000w Champion and 15 lights.I was impressed. It's a heck of a lot quieter than a 5k Coleman. Most of the noise is coming from your machine and not the exhaust.Stick your foot on the muffler to plug it and you'll see pretty quick what I'm talking about.

Try this:
Shop Craigslist for the smallest and cheapest flat bottom you can find.
Go to Home Depot and buy a 75' cable, 2 heavy duty snap hooks and a 100' 10 guage extension cord.
Mount genny in small boat, install hooks on the cable and ziptie the cord to the cable and you're done.
Next time you go fishing you can tow the little boat with the genny.

Hope that helps--

LOL..These aren't the responses I was looking for. I was afraid that it was most likely the nature of the beast. I am going to build an enclosure for it for sure. Get tired of listening to that damn thing for hours at a time. Ill keep my eyes peeled for something quieter. Keep the opinions coming guys.

I seen a thread the other day.In it there was a boat that had a great big ass box built over the generator. It was probably 4' x 4'.They had a duct vent screwed to the back of it that was about 15" X 15" or somewhere there abouts.Something like that may work pretty good.Probably be a real pita tho for refueling and starting and stuff.Foam ear plugs would probably be the cheapest and best solution if the noise bothers you.

That box is gonna help a bunch. Leave the back open like you said and put some sound dampening in the side walls and the forward half of the top. You can move the box to start and refuel when needed. Not the perfect solution but it's better than what you have now. I'd make the box from aluminum sheeting if you can afford it. If you genny is on a raised deck, try to get some airflow to it from underneath. That will help prevent the genny from getting hotter than it should. If you don't have the raised deck, might need to allow some airflow from the end of the box that faces the front of the boat. Just open a little area at the bottom edge of the box. Not too much, so sound can sneak back at ya!!

Boxes are about the only way to quite a loud genny down, I built this for my coleman and it works really good, just need to make sure it has proper ventalation. We never did anything with the exhaust, only extended it with a piece of exhaust straight pipe.

Hell, i have a hearing problem now. LOL.

I was thinking something exactly like the pictures. I want to make mine where i can hinge it up to fuel, etc. What are you guys using for sound deadening? I was thinking foam insulation of some sort?
