i have a javalina skull that i had to paint just to hold the smell in...worked.
Did you freeze it before cleaning it? Hogs (I know a javalina is not a hog) and I'm pretty sure bears are the same way if you don't remove all the skin and fat before you freeze it the fat soaks in/ stains the skull. I'm actually a taxidermist I just opened my shop and I'm not I'm bear country so I haven't had any bears yet. I'm actually one of the few that went to an actual school for it. If I remember right they said that hogs and bears are the same when it comes to euros. Sorry I'm no help when it comes to your gar I don't do fish. It did get me to thinking you might be able to boil it or a near boil with a pinch or two of baking soda (giving away secrets) it may fall apart or the BS might eat it. I don't know chit about a gars anatomy all I know about them is how to shoot them. That's how I do my euros the BS almost liquefys all the tissue. Guess you never know till you try it or know someone that has.
