Honestly that's probably the path I will take. But, again, that's not what this thread was asking. LEDs would work better for me cuz I mostly shoot clean clear lakes... but I also haven't shot at night in like 3 years so... there's that too

Well I take that back I've shot at night 1 time in the last year. Other than that it was almost 2 years ago

It seems like some (or a bunch if you're looking into paying for hps) of ledmo or LE leds that Gary tested and one inverter genny would be a good option for you I plan on getting 6 or 8 of those leds and a generator this summer.
I'll be efficiency testing those this weekend hopefully.

If you have the money to spend I suggest getting digital ballasts because they have a regular 120v plug on one side and 2 wires to connect to the mogul base and you are finished. They are also a little more efficient, light weight, and start faster. If you are wanting to save money then go with magnetic ballasts like ccpark posted. The magnetic ballast wiring is really not that difficult and once you wire one of them you will be fine.

On a side note I would suggest 250w hps rather than 400s. I have ran 150s, 250s, and 400s and basically I feel like the jump in brightness from 150s to 250s is huge, however, the jump from 250s to 400s is not nearly as much. 400s force you to run some loud generators.
