ok so guys i no you get tired of these threads but im askin for a friend he is going to buy some 150 watt hps lights and is wantin to convert them to 150 mh can it be done in the lower wattage ballasts like the 100/150 watters and is it the pulse start or the probe start bulbs he needs to get to pull it off

thanks dustin, thats what i needed to know. what im getting from all this information is that the hps to mh conversion with soon be a cool fact in the past. if hps only works with probe start mh lights and probe start are getting replaced with pulse start, then its pointless to buy hps banking on the fact on being able to find probe start bulbs. think ill buy mh lights and keep my halo brackets for muddy water.

...or you can jump up to 250-400 hps/mh,use digital ballasts, and switch em' out at will.

so i could buy either hps or mh 250 watt fixture, get a digital ballast, and the be able to switch both bulbs out? is this what you run Gargod?

If you run a Lumatek LK400 digital ballast and then will have the option of running a 250w or a 400w HPS or MH bulb. You can just turn a knob to select the wattage of your choice and install the matching bulb size! Plus digital ballasts are 1/3 to 1/4 of the weight and pretty much plug and play. If you step up to the 250/400w lights, you would most likely only need half as many lights to do the same job.

No. Probe start 150's were phased out several years ago. This effected 150 watt and under lights. Above 150 watt and you're good to go. Pulse start bulbs don't fire in a hps light without changing out the ignitor/pulsor.

Yes sir.Like JPeater said,I run Lumatek LK400 ballasts and can switch from 250/400 hps to 250/400 MH just by toggling a switch on the ballast.

dang those ballast are expensive!! guess you have to pay the cost to be the boss lol think im going to get the 250 hps. thanks again for all yalls output
