So will this keep 3 12 volt batts charged like a converter would or would you have to run it all the time.
it would be better for your battery life and the life of the alternator to run it all the time.

do it Gary. try to get a 3:1 pulley set up. you know you're gonna get a 2" pulley on any alt your gonna buy so get a 5-6" pulley for the motor. this will allow you to run the engine near idol and still make 2-3000 rpm on the alt. that way its quiet and always capable of making full power. add a cheap digital volt meter to the set up so you can always keep a eye on things. maybe get some rubber engine mounts to mount the motor on or the plate to the boat and it should be fairly quiet. think about it, a DC generator like this is cheap, light, quieter than a standard genny, and can be worked on cheap and easy too. plus there is no need to spend extra $ on converters, boxes, spare batteries, eat. for about $300 and 50lbs. to make 80-100 amps, its hard to beat DC power.
Isn't there something I need to do to a standard alternator to convert into a DC generator?

I read about it on a prepper forum, turning car alternators into generators using paddle wheels in creeks to make power.

does your car alternator cook your battery? no it kicks out at 14.5-15 v and rectifies at low voltage. should not hurt one battery over the other since it will create 12 v power to each individual battery. just make sure both terminal leads are the same size and length so both batteries are charged evenly.
actually when load increases the output does also, ive seen many factory dual battery vehicles cook batteries, i think you would have the potential to fry 3 batteries rather than just the one that is going bad, your correct with single battery cars the alternator works well

we have twin bats on our tractors and one alt as long as the bats are good no problem but when one starts going bad will boil the water out of one of them usually the good one or that's the way it always seems.

Ok...y'all brought up a good topic, but back on topic....

y'all think about chit to much. You know why you don't hook your converters up like powermax told you too, because if one converter goes out you don't charge any of your batteries... but hooked up the other way like we have dun for years....When one converter goes out you still got power and you can run for 3hr and swap battery/ converter combination...run for 3 hr then swap....that way you still stay hot....DO YOU UNDERSTAND? Our you can roll out like I do and not worry about it...I was wondering how long it would take you guys to finger diss out.

Sorry for the hijack... new thread...:D

You fishing or shooting hogs
Well....I got my truck stuck about 3 hrs ago...I just got it out and I'm going to go find some hogs right meow, but tomorrow I'm gonna try to kill me a rolling gator gar. I hate night fishing. <a href="http://s270.photobucket.com/user/wbg444/media/Mobile%20Uploads/Screenshot_2015-05-08-20-47-51_zpsldtgxqji.png.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj110/wbg444/Mobile%20Uploads/Screenshot_2015-05-08-20-47-51_zpsldtgxqji.png" border="0" alt=" photo Screenshot_2015-05-08-20-47-51_zpsldtgxqji.png"/></a>
