I recently starting rigging up an Evinrude 8hp kicker on my 1860 fisher. I chose to do a belcrank style rig and I'm having all sorts of problems with it. It is extremely hard to turn and when you turn it one way the opposite cable goes slack instead of staying tight, this is causing the cables to fall off of my front pulley. I have cable tensioners on the cables that keep them tight but just as soon as you turn they go slack. Does anybody have any idea or input on how to fix this? Thanks.

around the pulley drill a hole about every inch or so. place a zip tie through each hole and around the cable. do this around the back half of the pulley only and leave the side that is facing your first small double pulley open without any zip ties. the opposite cable is supposed to get loose when you turn. The zip ties keep the cable from falling off the pulley. ncbowfish showed me how to do that when i rigged my kicker and the cable hasnt fallen off one time ever...

Here are some pictures. In the front we have an old golfcart rim we cut and welded together to make the pulley. We came out to the side and ran the cables through a pulley off to the side. We the. Put a few pulled down the side of the boat and ran the cables to the motor. Towards the front we have cable tensioners to get the cables tight.

ive fished with a pulley system since 08 and havent had the first problem with it....and its the smoothest easiest to turn steering boat ive been on.

less is more when it comes to pulleys. the more pulleys and angles you have to go through the harder it is to turn. and the more tension on the cable it self, the harder it is to turn.

i can count on one hand the times ive had to stop fishing and do something to my steering on my kicker rig. its came off the pulley under the deck once, which i fixed the next day and it hasnt happened since. and honestly, i think thats the only problem ive had.

i keep my pulleys well oiled, and i change out my cables about once a year due to wear on a tight bend i have at the back by the kicker... other than that it just keeps on going like the energizer bunny.

here are a few pics..... it might not look as pretty as some of the other kicker boats ive seen, but its lasted for 5 years of HARD fishing. it looks a little ragged, and needs a new coat of paint. but that will happen when you fish saltwater every now and then.

This is my bell crank set up...it has a solid 3/8" rod that runs to the front of the boat...I had the cables and pulley set up on my other boat...will not do it again...the only issue I really had once I got it set up was the cable broke in one tourney...but I've had the set up I have now for 3yrs and nothing has broke on the steering

yea. i like that set up too donnie. the hood/cambell boys had that set up on their boat. they had a detachable steering stick that they could take off the front of the boat to go under bridges and stuff. i liked it.

Yep...I take 1 - 5/8" nut off and mine lays down flat

How many pulleys do you have down the length of the boat?
