Good info on the numbers. But can you explain lumens? Lumens for a concentrated beam can be lower than lumens from a flood beam and still be brigher, correct? How about light penetration into water. Does the warm glow of hps penetrate better that the higher color temp of mh or mv. What about leds? I guesss what i'm asking is, what color temp penetrates the water the best with the least reflection. I know a little about light, but no pro. Can you help with these questions. Thanks.

Oh, i am just getting back into the sport after about 20 years. Back in the day we just used off road type halogen lights and did pretty good. Now days seems everybody has ballasted lights. Never been on a boat with that type of lighting. Rigging mine now. Just trying to figure if it is worth it to me. I aint gonna be shootin more that 10 yards anyways. Thanks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumen_(unit)

The lumen (symbol: lm) is the SI derived unit of luminous flux, a measure of the power of light perceived by the human eye. Luminous flux differs from radiant flux in that luminous flux measurements (such as lumens) are intended to reflect the varying sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths of light, while radiant flux measurements (such as watts) indicate the total power of light emitted. The lumen is defined in relation to the candela as

1 lm = 1 cd·sr
As a full sphere has a solid angle of 4·π steradians,[1] a light source that uniformly radiates one candela in all directions has a total luminous flux of 1 cd·4π sr = 4π ≈ 12.57 lumens.[2]

ExplanationIf a light source emits one candela of luminous intensity uniformly across a solid angle of one steradian, the total luminous flux emitted into that angle is one lumen ( 1 cd·1 sr=1 lm ). Alternatively, an isotropic one-candela light-source emits a total luminous flux of exactly 4π lumens. If the source were partially covered by an ideal absorbing hemisphere, that system would radiate half as much luminous flux—only 2π lumens. The luminous intensity would still be one candela in those directions that are not obscured.

The lumen can be thought of casually as a measure of the total "amount" of visible light in some defined beam or angle, or emitted from some source. The number of candelas or lumens from a source also depends on its spectrum, via the nominal response of the human eye as represented in the luminosity function.

The difference between the units lumen and lux is that the lux takes into account the area over which the luminous flux is spread. A flux of 1000 lumens, concentrated into an area of one square metre, lights up that square metre with an illuminance of 1000 lux. The same 1000 lumens, spread out over ten square metres, produces a dimmer illuminance of only 100 lux. Mathematically, 1 lx = 1 lm/m2.

A single fluorescent light fixture that produces a luminous flux of 12000 lumens might light a residential kitchen with an illuminance of 500 lux. Lighting a larger area to the same illuminance requires a proportionately greater number of lumens.

Please note that the chart says HPF on the bottom left so amp draw figures will not be correct for 150 watt NPF hps lights.

I'm setting up a new boat, old one had the cheap 500 watt lights. I'm trying to decide between the 400 MH or the 400 HPS. I've read a lot of threads about ballast boxes and different stuff to set up. what is the difference between the Hps and Mh's do I have to buy ballast's or anything with either? Also should I put 5 or 6 lights on?

Hi fellow bowfishers. And women if anyreading. I am new to this site as well but am looking for something a bit different than you all are talking about. i am looking for a silent setup. Meaning nothing except shooters and the trolling motor. so i guess battery power is my choice. What is out there that will fill that job? Thanks in advance guys for all your help.

i have heard of people running 300 watt halogen bulbs in 500 watt fixtures. first question is is it possible to even do this because wouldnt the 500 watts the fixtures pull blow the 300 watt bulb because of to much power to the lower wattage bulb? also is there even a benefit to doing this? does it pull lower watts but have more reflection in the 500 watt housing? so whats the deal with this kind of setup i have been wondering about this for sometime

500 Watt bulbs pull 500 watts
300 Watt bulbs pull 300 watts
225 Watt bulbs pull 225 watts.................this is for halogen bulbs.....there is no ballast and such in a halogen fixture....the bulb controls the wattage pulled.......make sense?

Yes the 500 watt fixture will work better for coverage...IMO
