Ones a marine and one automotive obviously. You could probably use an automotive if you changed all the valves to a severe duty application.

 

I know there are several guys running the 8.1 truck motor. Cbow afflicted and I am gonna also.just curious tho. I know they do a cam swap and change springs and lockson the top end but wasn't sure of any other differences.

 

I dont really know all the specific differences. Only things I can think of r better quality valve train parts. And different computer

 

Builder doin the harness work I assume? If not, the guy that did mine an calebs does a hell of a job on em

I asked my marine mechanic the difference between my Mercury (Chevy) 5.0 in my ski boat and a standard Chevy 5.0 and he said the marine motor is blue printed and balanced (would need to look that up) and specifically designed to run high RPM's for an extended period of time. He said car motors will work, they just won't run and are not designed for hundreds of hours at 5K rpms that a marine motor is.

 

I believe this is the case most of the time. On the 8.1 truck motor I believe already comes with forged rotating assembly. Where the 5.0 did not. Now the 8.1 will require a can swap and head work to make the power and make it in the correct range. Then the springs and locks to keep it together. But I could be wrong. Thanks for the input

Hell no!!! He sent the motor with a FULL truck harness. I mean the under hood fuse box and everything was hangin on it. I took it all off an sent it to this guy and he completely rebuilt it an put a tiny 4 fuse panel that's bout 2in long... It went from full harness lookin like a bird nest to nice, neat bare essentials... Caleb had to do the same

 

The PCM marine Engine also has their own Computer Program and tune on the engine. Also the fuel control system is unique. Not sure waht all they do inside the motor but nothing has proven to be as reliable as their 8.1 in the long run. Then again they are not available anymore. I do know of a direct replacement engine that we will have very soon for this big block pushing 500+ HP on that same 8.1 style block. More info in a few weeks will be out.

I called Mark Snider with PCM and he told me that the differences between the 496 marine and 496 truck are Brass Plugs, Camshaft and calibrations. They program these motors to there peak and turn them back for longevity. I asked him what has replaced it as far as reliability. He told me they've had great luck with the 6.0L HO LSA motor. Same as the LS3 in the vettes with changes mentioned above is what he stated.
