Looking for tips to quiet a generator.

I wound up buying a 5500 watt generator and know it will be loud on the back of the boat. I thought about having the local machinest try to put a better muffler on it and possibly building a 3 sided box with a cooling fan in it to keep some sound from the front of the boat. What do you guys/gals do to quiet your generators down? I wanted to use the little quiet generators like the Honda i2000, but it wouldn't push 8 250 watt Halo's unless I bought two and my wife wouldn't have gone for that.....

Thanks for any advice or recommendations.

the box with a fan would prolly be your best bet...i doubt changing the muffler would help all that much and likes already been said it could actually hurt the performance of teh genny...

You don't need a three sided box. All you need is a peice of plywood slightly larger than the generator. Just lean it up against the generator while your fishing. You will block the sound by placing it between you and the generator. Works better than you would think.
