Looking into getting a troller.

I'm looking into getting a troller but have almost no experience with them. I've only ever been out on one boat that had one ("Fr3db3ar"s who I think had a 50#). My wife and I like his silent setup:tu: but I'm not a fan of being limited by a battery going dead, gas prises of an outboard, and I'm used to using the fast pass of a 9.9hp- now a 25hp outboard. Fr3d's troller seemed much slower than my old 9.9 :rage:.

Is there a difference in power between 12v and 24v motors other than amp draw?

I have 1848 slight modv, sub flush deck, 3,500w Genny running 6 300w halos on the front + 2 500w halos on the back, and a 25hp tiller.

I'm fine with pulling off the 2 500w halos to power some sort of converter (might add a couple 50w LEDs later on the back and likely replace the 300watters with 8-10 50w LEDs on the front).

What would you all suggests for a troller/converter setup? I think 112v troller would be way over kill and way over budget. The budget is somewhat flexible but not by that much:cool::pop:.

IMO depending on how much your using it, how much wind and current you're fighting will depend on how much thrust you need. On this new 18 I tried a 40# and when fighting current and wind one day I had to use it pretty much on full the whole time. The book will tell you that full speed on most any troller will last you about 2 hours. Now I have to 80# 24v and I can run it on 1/2 speed (same as 40# on full) and it should last 6 hours. I'm not always running that speed so last time I was out for 4 hours there sill seemed to be plenty of speed left even with running on full at times. This prop on the 80 is a lot better also as it just slices right through the grass and lillies. It's rare that they wrap up around the prop. They will build up on the shaft but a couple turns will dispose of this debris most of the time. I am able to power right through duckweed and lillies that would stop the 40# in no time.

I'd like to join you with your new setup Fred! Our boats are similar in size now. I think I'd still have to get a converter. I often go longer than 6 hours. ...expecialy when Shane jumps aboard...:gay:. Shane, his brother, and I tend to shoot a lot more rivers than lakes. The water current is one honey hole is fast enough and changing that I don't think a troller would do well. I'll just use the outboard there.

I run a 55# MinnKota 12v on my Pathfinder 17T. We had the trolling motor on for close to 4 straight hours on a battery the other day. Now I can get away with a 12v with only 55#'s of thrust because my skiff weight is ony 500lbs and have a C60 Yamaha hanging off the back. What's very cool is using a Power Pole in the current. Once I find a spot that fish cruise through, I can pole down and wait for them to cruise by.
