I was given 2 Honda gx270 9 hp motors yesterday. One of them has a 2:1 reduction on it and the other doesn't. Would this gear reduction be ok to use on a fan? Also who is the best person to contact about getting the right prop? I read through a lot of the old posts and saw there was a guy on here from slip stream hover is he still around? He seemed very knowledgeable.

I have talked to competition aircraft and slip stream hover. Competition said that I should run up to a 52" three blade with my motor and reduction. Slip stream said a 43" with my reduction. What size would you guys recommend? I will be going with competition for my prop I just wanted to get more then one opinion on what prop to run from different companies.

u could run a 3 blade prop 60" with 14 degree pitch blocks if it is a true 2:1 ratio.

It is a true 2:1 I looked the serial number up through Honda. It's going on a 1648 so I don't know if I want to go that big because it will put the fan up pretty high

if its going on that, I would recommend a 32" prop, direct drive no reduction and keep it light and low.

That's what I was thinking so I was suprised when I was told a 52" prop. Ill call them and ask about going with a smaller prop and more pitch. Is there a difference in 3-4 blade? In the email I received they said if I want to go smaller they suggest going with a 5-6 blade prop. Not sure if I want to spend that kind of money on a prop though

well just think of this, there is a fine line were u can have to many blades. it requires a certain amount of hp to just swing a blade, thus more blades u can loose a certain amount of hp. Now with that said, you can gain in certain areas with more blades. Here is one for instance. Im building a fan for guy that wants a 35hp as his engine. He only has a 60" bottom boat, so you don't want to make you prop bigger than 12" less than the bottom of your boat for the tipping issue. He is gonna run a 4 blade 48" arrowprop with 14 degree pitch, no reduction. so match your prop to your hp and boat and you will be just fine.

How many rpm's on a 48" with dd?

3450. This is 66% of slip, in other words anything over 75% of mach (tip speed) will cause blade damage or no increase of power. The 35hp setup im referring to will have about 300 ft/lbs of static thrust and a wind speed of 45.5 mph.
