I'm interested to hear also. I built a generator box this past weekend that was totally enclosed. The box was approximately 2" wider and 2" taller than my champion 2000 watt inverter generator. I lined the inside of the box with 1/2" foam insulation. I installed a 4" fan on the intake side of the box and cut an exhaust hole on the other (I did not pipe the exhaust out). After letting the generator run in the box for about 2 hours, I heard it start to skip a little which I assumed was the generator suffocating. when I opened the box, the generator was too hot to touch. The handle felt like it was about to melt in my hand and one of the black corner, trim pieces had shrunk and was disformed. Long story short, no more generator box for me.

 

just don't..... you making a bomb with the gas in the tank.

 

ive had one boat setup this way and worked very well as long as you had the cooling fans on, just wanted to see if anyone had any new clever ideas!

 

That's been my plan for a while. But I don't have enough room in the back of our boat for it. When it gets to happing. I will be using an A.C. powered exhaust fan. Harbor freight has some little squirrel cage fans that will put blow any marine blower.

 

How about a good inverter gen and not bother or chance an enclosure thermal baking an engine with a tank of gas on top.

 

New gennys are quiet I was always worried about the fans breaking and it frying the genny. Many years ago I built one with no fans and just flip the lid up still to hot. I finally just bought a ei 6300 yammy and the new small one even better and you could always build just a shield for the front Just some thoughts

 

Generator box is a badddd idea. Heard too many horror stories like the one mentioned above. What size boat are you running, what size generator will you need, what lights? I'm sure there's another solution, because fully enclosed generator boxes have been proven to be a disaster.

 

I have had good luck with 3 sided boxes, and putting the generator in the back corner of the boat. Obviously a fully enclosed box would we much more quiet, but this is very simple. It just acts as a wall between you and the generator and helps significantly.

 

I have a small piece of plywood that I prop up against my genny simply to act as a wall. No sides or top on it. It is remarkable how much that helps kill the sound.

 

Do y'all paint your generator boxes red and put Honda stickers on em? I heard it makes em real quiet. Lol
