Guys,

Looking to get into bowfishing and would like some on the job help. I live near the chain of lakes in NE Illinois and it seems like a good spot to start. Maybe even make some trips down to the Illinois River.
Never bowfished, just bow hunted for deer.

I need a new bow, compound or recurve and a set up so any advise is helpful. My regular compound, PSE Source, has a 31" draw at 65lbs. not sure what I need for bowfishing.

Do you use releases or fingers?

Thanks, in advance.

Welcome to the site and the madness that will soon consume your life, spare time and money.

As far as bows are concerned, you could get by with just about anything, but most guys will agree that 30 - 50# is good. Most people shoot with fingers. Very few use a release.

I'm sure someone from your area will chime in on what poundage they recommend for the type of terrain yall expect to shot in up there.

welcome to the site. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you are interested in getting together with a group of guys out that way. The BAI (bowfishing association of IL) has a real strong group of shooters and puts on events for everyone to geth together and shoot all year.
