No, the GPS works without a data connection. Download the maps before you go, and you're good to go. It's super easy to download them. Then the GPS works wherever you are, and has your location on the map.

I have the app for my iphone, love it. Thought is was only $10 tho?

 

No what I'm getting at is that my iPad is a wifi iPad...so I have no gps antenna like the 3G iPads...so I figured that for $82 I could get a gps receiver vs paying for a wifi hotspot that is still limited to cellular connectivity and also a monthly charge...

 

Ah, I gotcha. Didn't realize there was no GPS in the wifi version.

 

well just bought the tablet,the app,and the stand......I have several extra RAM mounts,so will attach one to the stand...here goes!!

This may be just want im looking for! I want the GPS features of a nice depth finder but really don't have use for the depth finder abilities.

What did the setup cost you?

 

$20,for the holder,$30 for the RAM,$100 for the Tablet,and $50 for the Download (its not a depthfinder per se though)

Ok the research I have done it runs off the Android market. I have the android market on my tablet and my phone....it cost me $10 for the Navionics App. I only had to pay for it once for both devices.

 

....do I need the $50 one or........................

 

Is that available on their website? You should be able to just download it right off of the tablet when you get it from the app called "Play Store"....

The one for 9.99 on Apple is for the IPhone App....the one for 49.99 for the IPad HD app does have a better pixel rate because of the larger screen. Better detail can be noticed when using the satellite background. Not sure on the android play store.

Does the navionics app automatically pan as you drive on the iPad? Or any tablet for that matter. The app on my old droid I had to pan manually.

Let us know how it works out kuger. I was about to go buy a lowrance elite 7 but if this works out I may go this route. Seems cheaper anyway.

Ok I have been researching and asking around and can't seem to get any real stright answers. According to the guys at best buy there is no way to use gps on any tablet without having internet connection or paying a monthly payment. If I'm gonna have to pay a monthly payment it's gonna be a deal breaker for me.

Is there anyone using a tablet with navionics without being connected to the internet and without paying a monthly payment to AT&T or Verizon or such? If so what device?

From what I've read on the Internet I don't think that the guys at Best Buy really knew what they were talking about but I'm having a problem finding somebody that does.

 

I'm thinking no. This is what google maps does with no cellular and no wifi (stand on your head to read)

 

From what I've read some tablets have internal gps and some don't but the guys at best buy said none do.

 

On my way to work yesterday I had the navionics app open on my Samsung Tab2 and the little arrow was moving as I drove. I do not have a wireless provider for the tablet but it does have an internal GPS. I was not able to get a map overlay to work on it because I didn't have a internet signal.

 

Lets see one mounted on y'all's boat. Just curious about the size and look. Sounds a lot better than 3000.00 for the lowrance I was lookin at.

My Ipad is a first version original. Maybe doesn't have the internal GPS. Wouldn't try and buy one on the cheap from Ebay for this use just in case.

 

Correct...ipad version 1 WiFi only tablet does not have GPS.
