I have a Mercury 200 Sportjet, which uses the Optimax 200 powerhead and is water cooled.

Does the exhaust have to go into the water?

It does now,but the exhaust tubes go straight down onto the trim tabs I just installed.

I removed the exhaust hose(4")...Is something gonna break? Or,does it matter if the exhaust is going into the water or not?

Didn't know if the exhaust went into the water to build some type of pressure for the engine,or is it just to reduce noise?

Im not for sure Jeff but I do know a bunch of guys move the exhaust to make them sound off. I seen one last year and I though the guy had a built outboard. Sounded awesome! But he told me he rerouted the exhaust to come out just under the hood to make it sound like a bad a$$. Check out Youtube Jeff. Look up Mercury 2.5. That mother is badass sounding.

I went ahead and took them off and nothin' blew up! lol It was noticeably louder, not "cool" loud, but more like daycare center loud,ya dig? lol

I always laugh at the movies where the hero is taking off in the outboard boat. Sounds like a dang bigblock. Could you imagine hearing that thing rolling up on you in a slough or bay? lol

I'd give my left nut to make a few passes in that sucker.

The best sounding boats I've ever heard are the Top Fuel Hydros. Like "Problem Child", they'll make your guts rattle! And the smell of burnt alcohol! But that'd never work on a bowfishin boat but if it could you would surely be the first one to the "hole"!! Lol

Cut outs and above water exhausts are illegal on alot of lakes, better look into that!
Just remembered you said they come out above your trim tags, well in that case they would be out of water when planed off and should do the same or similar thing I would imagine?

Thought about putting a set of cutouts onthe airboat just for the grins. I use to build them and the look on someone face when you open them up is entertaining

See that black 3" tube sticking down? There's one on the other side also.I added some 9x12 trim tabs on it since this pic was taken, and they are directly under those tubes.I thought about the same thing you did Mark, and that was that when I'm on plane, those aren't in the water anyway...just when idling. So I removed them, but I definitely could hear the sound difference compared to having them.

Do you think they put out enough pressure to affect the tabs being that close? If not,I'm putting them back on.Hell,if I wanted to wear ear plugs,I'd bought an airboat! lol

Cut a 45* angle on the bottom of them. That will keep from causing any back pressure on the tabs and still keep that extra volume down

Hey Garrett, you drinkin' again? :bff: There's already a 45 cut on the bottom of them! lol I think I'll just shorten them up a bit.
Son of a.... I didn't even notice that lol. You could always put some actuall turn out tips if you were really worried about them. I can't see it being a problem with the angle cut on the bottom
