Fish are cold blooded so water temperature has a big effect on penetration. A fish 8' deep in 70 degree water is much easier to bury an arrow in than a 40 degree fish at 8 feet. That said...find shallower fish

no....heavy is not the secret(if there is one)you can get too heavy, there is a fine balance. The best thing to do is expiriment
think I can see what you are talking about on the balance. have noticed the farther out flatter shots the harder to get the arrow to dig in and penetrate the water so the weight of the arrow and how many pounds pull on the bow comes into play if the arrow is shot too hard it will try to plane out on really far out shots seems if the arrow flight is an arch will really dig in better so weight comes into play. so it is a balancing problem.

I built arrow with full length 2315s that have Beman trad arrows inside and some cartel fita inside those, few hundred grain of nib break off weights inside the cartels. First 8 inches of the alum 2315 has 1" prices of all thread stuffed inside.
The arrows flex better and stand up to bending much better than SS arrows. I think they are 3600 grains or so, they work much better than reg arrows on deep fish.
