So I read the directions wrong and drilled and tapped the reel handle too instead of making the bigger hole that would allow it to slide through. It seems like a really good fit and seems to hold tight. Is there any reason I should drill out the handle to a larger diameter(11/64) to allow the screw to slide? Or should I keep it a tight fit like it currently is??

Clearance drill the handle because you can't snug the handle up right if it's tapped also. You will end up with a wobbly handle and eventually a broken gear or bolt.
