Alright I just picked up a 16x55 or so. It's a older hull. It has 8 inch gunnells or walk around on it.they are foam filled. I thought this would be cool but it isn't. It takes way too much space up inside the boat. I was wondering if I could take them off and rebrace the boat and have it be ok. I bought the boat for a killer deal and it came with a 50hp evinrude that runs like a champ. Here are a few pics so yall can tell me what yall would do. I was thinking if I couldnt do anything with this then is try to find a cheap hull and put the 50 on it.

My intention on this boat wasn't to have a big project. I was planning I'm building a deck genny platform. I'd like to take the walk around out.

If it were my boat, I would probably just try to figure out a way to deal with it as it sits. You go to cutting out the gunnels and you may seriously weaken your hull. Them old boats were built like that for a reason...

Yea I know it'd weaken the boat so I didn't know if making new ribs and would strengthen it back up. Making them into storage is a good idea. I didn't even think about that.

I mean yea, you could tear all that stuff out and build new ribs, but dang man, thats going to be a whole lot of work.

Like Jeff suggested, just cut you some hatches out of them dig some of the foam out and make you some extra storage space. I think it would work out for the best.

Wish I had them on my boat, but I dont want to waste money on my boat since it's only a 1648, but when i find an 1860, it will definitely have some small walkarounds for storage.

Nice place to sit too :tu:

I need to take out the floor in it and put some tread plate in. Do float pods help with stability at all? (Sorry if that's a ra-tard question, I'm still new to boats)

On my storage bins I cut out, I used the aluminum I cut off to get the foam out. Basically I cut my door size, took out foam, then added hinges to my original aluminum. The difference of the length of the hinge gave me a overlay so the door is supported. Also added a latch. All was done with grinder and rivets. I would post pics but I can't figure out how to on new iPhone.
