My son (in the Marine Corp) wants to get his girl a bolt action rifle for target shooting and deer hunting (maybe elk also) she is 5'5 120 and loves the 30/30 but he is thinking the 308 would be better. What do y'all think a good choice of rifle is for her. Don't want to break the bank but don't want cheap either.
Thanks for your input.

Rem model 700 25-06 or .270.

I like the 25-06, shot a guys 700 we use to hunt with and could drive tacks with it. My dad has a little single shot cheapo gun from walmart chambered in 25-06 and I love it.

25-06 is a great gun but if you are thinking maybe elk a 270 may be what you want or a 270 wsm have pretty good balistics and not alot of recoil

7mm08 is perfect for what she needs. Or 6mm both great guns that a small framed person can shoot any animal with. My choice would be 7mm08 if he goes with something bigger make sure u put a muzzle break on it + make sure the gun fits her.

Thank you guys, I will relay this to him. She is a dancer and pretty strong for her size. She can shoot a 12 ga and an 30/06 but they rock her pretty bad. So I'm wondering if the 270 would be about right for her. Still, we want her to be completely comfortable with it so she will want to take it out and target shoot any time.
I need to get some of the women on here to chime in and give their preferences...maybe I should re post this and title it 'wedding dresses' or something...

Honestly though if you want a gun that she will absolutely love and never be scared of I'd go with a 7mm08 . It depends on what and where u live, if she's going to mostly shoot targets and deer she doent need a 270. Basically if she's going to elk hunt once or twice in her life, I would buy a smaller caliber that she will love to shoot as much as a 22. Then when she does go elk hunting she can borrow a bigger gun from somebody. Don't allow her to shoot the bigger gun untill there's a elk in front of her and she will never know it kicked. I do this all the time with women and children, it keeps them from flinching when it matters the most.

my wife is 5'3'' and 125 lbs and she shoots 30-06 and a 270 all the time, they both have limb saver but pads on them and they dont kick bad at all with the pads on them, but just make sure that she is comfortable with whatever you choose. if you were closer id say come on over and shoot them to try them out

That is always good advice and I will have my son read all this when he is home for Christmas.

I bought one of these in .308 for my wife (about the same size) to use with reduced recoil ammo = PERFECT!! But I like it so much that it's all I shoot with standard rounds.. I love the gun and the caliber! The standard compact has a few other options in caliber.
