i have been using the cheap simmons 3-9x40 that came on my Winchester model 70 30-06 when i bought it about 5 years ago. Its done its job and ive never really had a problem with it other than it does get a little blury on some longer shots. but looking to step up to a higher qualitly scope this season.

So throw what ya go out there. I dont really have a price range yet but dont go to crazy on me. a few hundred dollars is what im looking at probably but tell me what and why even if it is a little more than a few hundred. But if its $600-$700 plus forget it lol lets try to keep it well below that.

Thanks

Check out Sightron scopes.. $300 bucks will put you on a good one!! I think they're the best for the money if you aren't willing to spend for a trijicon accupoint!!

Here is another one to check out Vism. The have a a red or green laser with mil-dot crosshairs. I put the green laser on my AR. The have good clear glass too. I bought it at optic planet dot com. You can see the green laser better than the red but the red works when it gets cold the green doesn't. The laser is mounted inside the scope too.

Well ummm yeah I guess so haha. I got it for yote hunting at night and works great I can look through the scope and turn on the laser and know where the bullet is going. (I have a hard time seeing crosshairs at night). If you're not using that gun for night then it's not worth it but it looks cool haha.

thats kinda what i was figureing it was. This gun is pretty much a deer rifle only. Wouldnt mind shooting a yote with it but ive never had the chance. Thanks for the input though i may look into one of those if i ever put together a gun for night coyote hunting.

sightron makes a GOOD scope especially in their SIII scopes, Nikon monarchs are clearer than the majority of leopolds Ive looked through I have one on my distance rifle. Im not a leo fan, not enough scope for the money, just paying for a name. Vortex makes a good scope just stay the heck away from the bottom end crossfires POS I have had 2, but their vipers are clear and track amazing. the Bushnell 4200s are possibly the best bang for the buck right now for long distance shooting. If im not shooting fish or crawling around in a fire Im shooting long range rifles. Ive ran into far too many crap scopes and my next is probbably a bushnell 4200 6-24-50 or a nightforce (if I can hide the price from my wife...1400!).

The biggest advantage to me with the more expensive scope it the quality/clearity of the lens. I was in the same boat as you last year and decided to go with the Leupold VX2 (the VX3 was to pricey for me) but the quality of the Leupold lens isn't even in the same class as the cheap scopes I've been shooting for years. I'd also suggest the 50mm lens. The leupold is great for low light conditions and can pic up a VX2 for around $500! JMO tho!

What do yall think about the leupold rifleman scopes? I've always heard good things about leupold but I realized this is one of there low end scopes and just curious if has the same quality. I'm looking at it in the 3-9x40 version. Or is it worth it to go with the VX-2. The rifleman is more what I'd like to spend but understand I might have to spend more to get what's gonna be best for the price range

Got several.. 3-9x40's.. They've all lasted for years and still crystal clear... We've always bought them from $125-$250.. I've got to say I'm impressed with them.. Great service and fine product for the $$$.. just look through them at the shop if you can and compare for yourself!!

Best thing to do is go to a Scope dealer take 3 or 4 in the price range you are looking to spend. The best time todo this is late afternoon when the sun is going down this is when you will be able to tell the best scope. Look thrue all of them and pick what you want. I am a Burris Fan and there Ballistic Plex works.

I built several rifles last year and put Pentax on all my 22LRs. Pentax or Burris are great scopes for the money. I've got a Nightforce on a 338 that is incredible but I just put a Sightron SIII 8-32 X 56 on a 308 and the clarity is just as good as the Nightforce. The Sightron may not repeat as well as the Nightforce or be as tough but for a third of the money I thought I'd give it a try. I don't understand everyone using a 3-9 scope, if I only need 3 power why not just use open sights or a red dot? A minimun I always suggest is a 4-16 x 50. That give you minimal magnification if needed but also lets you zoom in tight if needed. Just some thoughts. I guess my thoughts on quality for the money would be Sightron, Pentax or Burris.

In all truth,I have a cheap Burris on my .220 Swift, that was on my quad when it rolled several times and my girlfriend leaned the same gun between the cab and bed of the truck and I didnt know until I started to drive away, its been dropped and hit....and that scope has stayed true!

Hard to beat Nikon and Leupold 2 great scopes and companies with a long standing history and have some reasonable models out as well. Stay far away from Simmons, when I worked in a pro shop if I had 10 guns come in with scope problems 8 of em would be Simmons, we changed them out just about daily. Hardly ever had any trouble out of Nikon, Leupold. Heck even a cheap Tasco or Bushnell would be better then a Simmons. Good luck

I got sevral Nikons in my gun safe years of service with not a single problem, one of which has survived a 20 foot fall out of a tree...

I have two Monarch 3.5-10 x 50 scopes, one 3-9 x 40 Monarch, and a 3-9 x 40 Nikon ProStaff on my .444

for what I paid for my Pro Staff (half the cost of the same Monarch, it has been a fantastic scope.

If your looking for those extra 15 minutes of hunting time in the evenings, or being the first one in the area to bust a cap.... go with a Nikon Monarch, or a VXII or better Leupold...

all that other stuff, well its either over priced, over rated, or a combo of the both. (No offense to you guys that spend 900+ dollars on a scope if you got it spend it, but its not needed to kill wild game, more like setting up social status at the camp) LOL

I have to take exception to that bud, when you make your living with a gun,and every shot has to count, and sometimes is 600 yrds or better, you better have the best, and that isnt cheap.
I do agree many have the "Orvis",syndrome, but dont lump me into that crowd

I have been very impressed with the Nikon scopes I have now, got a Omega on my ML, Buckmaster 4-12x50 on my 223 varmint and 3-9x50 Prostaff on my 308 and they shoot and work very nicely. I have shot some incredible groups and targets at 500yds or more with the 223 and 308 with no problems.
