We use Pro Retrievers with 200# planer board line without floats.

Most of them can be brought in without a float, especially if you have a partner to put a backup shot in them :tu:

 

Here's what I use.
It is Maryland Legendary Rob Davis's idea.
Take a bottle, and fill it with foam, and tie
on your string. Match the bottle cap size
with a rubber table foot cap, and your good
to go. If it is deep water however, the Ray can
sink that small of a float if you don't go after it right away:

Gross.... I'd never eat one after smelling them last summer in that heat. That almost turned me against fish all together.

 

They arent bad. I'll never do the steaks again.
Southern Rays taste better than the cownose,
but honestly, when I fry em, I put them in the
fridge and eat them cold the next day.
They taste much better, I like em.

 

when we shoot'um we just use retrivers or spinners- no floats or anything.

 

cownose you can shoot all day long without a float on a spinner or a retriever.....when you get into big southerns (over 100 pounds) you will probably want a float or just a retriever with the extended bottle for alot of line.

I also use the muzzy stingray points, pass one through em and it aint pullin off unless you hit em on an edge.

 

can you use regular carp points or should i get stingray points

 

carp points are fine.

 

Just shot my first southerns this weekend and used Cajun long barbs with spinner. Worked fine but they were nowhere near 100 lbs. I could really see needing a float or retriever on the big boys.

 

ive only shot like 40-50lbers but my spinner held up just fine, just have some one ready for a back up an its game over...
