How do you go about sharpening your points back?

The muzzy points (carp and gar points) and grapple points I can get almost back to the original form minus the concave indention's. I rigged a machinist device that makes it real easy. After a couple of points you can get the "feel" for the appropriate angle.

Mine get pretty janked up too!

Even if the point is completely bent over you can bring it back to its original shape with this method. I just hate buying the extra points when I can get two or three good uses out of them.

I wouldn't recommend this method for one or two tips, but if you have 10 or so, you can knock them out in about 10-15 minutes.

That's a good question...LOL

I work in a foundry and have access to all kinds of machinist tools, so I carry my dull points to work and sharpen them there. If you had to buy all of it from scratch; sander included, it would probably be pricey.

I think I have seen the main 6 sided col let holders at Harbor Freight (fairly cheap, can't remember exactly). The col let itself isn't very expensive and the threaded part is just a sawed off bolt.

When shooting, I keep a medicine bottle in my pocket with sharpened points in it. I have terrible disc problems in my neck, and do not shoot a lot of weight (25-28) lbs. So keeping a sharp tip is a must!!!

I burned the living hell out of my finger last year sharpening some...Though I was picking up one that needed sharpening and it turns out it was the one I just held against the wheel for 30 seconds.....people do dumb things.......That was just plain stupid! LOL I bought new ones this year...and indexing hear and a miter jig meant for surface grinding would be the best tool to use...if I was to do it over again that what I would use to get the right angles. grind...turn 120 grind turn 120 grind turn 120....done.

OK, for those interested, I done a little leg work on the items required to do this. Maybe its worth it, maybe not, but these are the numbers I came up with.

The sander, for those that do not already have one: Harbor Freight Item # 47404 $84.99
Item# 25130 Collet Holder $38.00 (you get a square one too)
Item# 27701 1/4" 5c Collet $13.00 (Muzzy)
Item# 27702 5/16" 5c Collet $13.00 (Innerloc)
4" bolt with 1/4x28 threads (Muzzy)
4" bolt with 5/16x24 threads (Innerloc)
Appropriate nut to hold position

Total for all supplies including sander: $148.99 + Shipping
Total for holder and both collets: $64.00 + Shipping

Assuming once it gets dull, you buy some more and assuming you need all supplies (worst case):
Muzzy Carp Points $2.95 (for two) Have to sharpen 101 tips before payback
Innerloc Points $7.20 (for two) Have to sharpen 42 tips before payback

We use to have a drill bit sharpener here at work and I'd dress the tips up here.. But someone decided we didn't need to sharpen drill bits anymore so they put the sharpener away in storage.. A diamond drill bit sharpener will put out some sweet super sharp tips..
What you have there looks great!!

I just keep a dremel on the boat and use it to sharpen tips on the go. I usually just round the sharp edges to get an even point. When I'm not on the water, I use a bench grinder. I really like your setup, tho :tu: Those grapple tips are pretty expensive! My buddy spent a while on a grapple tip and made it 6 sided like a Muzzy. Holds up a heck of a lot better against rocks than the 3 sided design. I'll have to make me somthin like that to get good even sides.:)

I got an piece of a junk arrow with an old tip (minus barbs) that I chuck into my cordless drill and spin that on my bench grinder, helps keep them from getting loop sided plus I can do a pile in a couple seconds.

ummm...if you all are willing to spend over 200 dollars to sharpen a 3.00 point you are crazy. shoot that point till it is dull and all banged up then put a new one on. We shoot muzzy tips and get at least 200 to 300 shots per tip if not more. Of course the better you get and hit more fish you hit then rocks and tires the more shots you will get per point. I have shot dull tips and still put the arroww tip and barb all the way through the fish. That is all you need and if your not putting any arrow tips through the fish then you need to up your poundage a little bit. If you have physical problems that keep you from pulling more weight then rig up a small crossbow set. And for you moneysavers out there who use your home grinders to sharpen tips, most companied have a special coating on the tips that keep them from rusting and corrosion for longer periods..If you grind all that off to sharpen your points then your points will become week and start to break apart when you miss and hit rocks and debris. Just a little side note!!

Bench grinder for me. I just put them on an old arrow and roll it in my fingers. It makes a nice round sharp point again and I have not had any lopsided points. When they get worn way down I just pitch em. As far as rust, I have not had a problem with tips getting rusty. I use new tips in lakes and resharpend tips in the river where it is shallow and sometimes rocky.
