This is an old post, but in case someone comes across it later and wanted an answer.

Short answer: it does nothing for performance. I have two oneidas with bottles. I put a shoot-through rod on my Osprey to see if it did anything (like feeding line smoother, shooting straighter, etc). They shoot the exact same. It looks cool I guess, but it does nothing.
I will say that it does a couple things for you. I think it keeps the line out in front a little more which, when shooting slides, is a good thing. It also can be used as a tool to help reel in fish with the actual reel instead of dropping the bow and hand lining them in. Can be used the same way as a fishing rod. Hold the brake, pull up, reel the slack as you let it down and repeat. Granted the ams reel isnt buiilt for that and the line isnt being held by anything other than the pressure between the brake and the wheel.
dropping the bow and hand lining them in.
Thats the thing i miss since going to the Mega Mouth :(

i shoot slides and haven’t really noticed any advantage between the rod/no rod. If thats an issue for someone, then yes, i guess it keeps the line out front. I always hand line the fish in because the ams retriever isn’t great at reeling them in. Thats why I didn’t mention that aspect. For a regular reel, it makes more sense to me to have the rod.
