This is a pic I snapped of Mat after I threw a piece of rip-rap into the water on my side of the bridge. My truck was blocking his view and he was running over to save my life. Really I think he was more concerned that the truck keys were in my pocket.
Those gar are considered melanistic. Some are always black, but others change back and forth due to pressures/tensions in their waters. We've shot a lot of them out of the Wabash River in August in northcentral Indiana. Ours are black on every part of the fish- eyes too. Really cool fish.
