Look similar to a dogfish(bowfin).

i've heard of them never seen one in person but people catch them in ponds around here. they were found first here in maryland so if they do spread more i'll be shooting them

 

I shot my first one that 100% for sure it was one yesterday. About 27" long and 6# and a ton of nasty teeth

Their nasty mean & I believe the MD Law is if you catch one, you have to kill it & cant release it. My boss caught (2) a few weeks ago in the Potomac durning a Bass tourney, (1) was about 20" long & the other was about 36" long. He said they put up a heck of a fight on a rod n reel.

 

watched a show once on em from either the discovery channel or nat geo n they done came up with a sub species of these things that has grown here there callin em a super snakhead or some dang thing they was able to live in the nastiest most dirty places imagineable and they talked like they could breifly walk or scoot on land for short distances n live out of water for periods of time lol id hate to be wadeing into a big school of em too they would attack whatever got into the water. one they had on there had a fish in its mouth chokeing on it that was almost twice its size

 

I saw a special on them a few weeks ago on TV.. None of the news was good either.. They're rough on pan fish populations. The ones in FL. were in some of the canals and a fella was fishinig for them.. They're some nasty fish.

 

Anyone heard of any in Alabama?

 

The largest bowkilled one I know of. It's not mine but I do think Steve comes on here....

 

I was on the boat with Steve when he shot it it was dark looking but still had the pattern. But those things look mean looking and seems like they get darker when they get bigger.

Bowfin/dogfish only the males have spots by there tails. It is a fake eye to deceive predators when they are guarding their young.

That would be so cool to have in a giant fish tank. Talk about a monster fish.

 

once it breaks through the tank to come after your a$$ you woyld say different! thats one of the reasons we are having the problem. they are to aggresive to keep in a normal tank and people let them go!

I been slamming these things for 3 months now probably taken about 30-35 of them from 14 inches to 33 inches.
